Larry Leon Waggoner II—A life well played.

Known to some as “Mess,” to others as a legendary bartender, drummer, storyteller, and all-around great guy—Larry has taken his final bow, leaving behind family and friends who will forever hear his loud voice and laughter, feel his rhythm, and wonder how he managed to charm every single person he met.

Larry’s spirit was as big as his love for music. One thing that was constant, everyone loved Larry, he made an unforgettable impact on those he met – whether for a moment, a song, or a lifetime. It was a better life for those of us who got to call Larry our son, our brother, dad, or our friend.

Larry was born in Virginia, in August 1969, son of the late Larry Leon Waggoner and Myrna Zelle Thaxton. He was raised in Spring Texas, moved all around; however, it was South Padre Island where he was truly home. With the sand beneath his feet, and a drumbeat in his soul, Larry found his peace watching the sun dip below the horizon.

Larry’s legacy lives on through his family—his son Aaron Waggoner, his 2 grandchildren Azariah and Asher, his sister Traci (Waggoner) Corp, and his brother Ricky Waggoner.

A celebration of Larry’s life will take place on Wednesday, March 5, at 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.at Jake’s Restaurant & Bar on South Padre Island, where friends and family will swap stories, raise a glass, and send him off the way he wanted—surrounded by love, laughter, and maybe a slightly off-key rendition of one of his favorite songs. His family will spread his ashes at sunset, ensuring he gets the best seat in the house for every sunset to come.

And if Larry could leave us with one final piece of wisdom, it would be this: Never take the sunset for granted and don’t forget to tip your bartender!

You may sign the online guestbook, light a remembrance candle, or send words of comfort to the family of Larry Leon Waggoner II at www.thomaegarza.com.

Funeral arrangements entrusted to the care of Thomae-Garza Funeral Home and Crematorium, 395 S.
