<p>Michael John McCarthy was born on Oct 12th 1940 in Chicago Illinois. First son of the late Joseph and Irene McCarthy. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1957 at the age of 16. He went on to marry the late JoAnne Wehmeyer Sept 29th 1962 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mount Vernon. Father to Kathleen Anne Alexander (Mike Alexander), Kevin M. McCarthy(Natalie McCarthy). Grandfather to Isabella Rose McCarthy and Joseph M. McCarthy. Brother to Larry, John, Dan, the late Paul, Tom, and Susan.</p><p><br></p><p>Mike as he was known to his family and friends did a host of different jobs growing up: working on the farm, washing dishes, waiting tables, the A &amp; P store, at the railroad and still found time to go to college at SIUC. &nbsp;After college he entered federal service with The Commission and ended when he retired from the National Guard. During his life, he traveled extensively throughout the United States and overseas. </p><p><br></p><p>He split much of his time between Woodlawn, Illinois and Saint Louis, Missouri. While he made his living in Saint Louis Mike always considered Woodlawn and the farm that has been in the family for over 100 years to be his home. He enjoyed being at the farm more then any other place he had lived.</p><p><br></p><p>His continued love of reading and learning went on throughout his life as did his LOVE for old cars.</p><p><br></p><p>A Visitation will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 12:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Mount Vernon, Illinois.
