Avis (Marvene) Subera

Avis (Marvene) Subera, Richland Center High School class of 1953, passed away February 2, 2025. She was third in her graduating class.

Marvene was born on June 5, 1935, in a small farmhouse on the Francis Shepherd farm near Sabin, Wisconsin. The attending physician at birth, Dr. Cecil Dull, brought his fishing pole as well as the black bag and went fishing in the adjacent Mill Creek while awaiting delivery. She was the daughter of Paul Bee and Dorothy (Dosch) Bee. Marvene’s elementary education was at the one room Pleasant Ridge School in the town of Willow. After graduating from high school, she worked for the Richland County Department of Public Welfare. On September 21, 1954, she married Korean War Veteran Richard (Dick) M. Subera of Yuba, Wisconsin. They were long time members of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Richland Center, where they were both baptized and married.

For several years, they farmed in Snow Valley, Rockbridge Township, Richland County where their three daughters were born. Then in 1967 they moved to Janesville where Richard worked as a finish carpenter for Marklein Builders. Marvene worked for 8 years as a secretary for Helgesen Harvestore in Janesville. In 1975 she started at the U.S. Postal Office in Janesville as a secretary and then a supervisor until she retired in 1995. She also continued her education at UW Rock County and obtained a Wisconsin Real Estate Broker license. They were members at First Lutheran Church in Janesville.

Richard and Marvene retired to the shores of Lake Camelot near Nekoosa in 1995, where they enjoyed boating, fishing, and friendly neighbors. The Subera’s were active members at St. Lukes Lutheran Church in Wisconsin Rapids. Marvene’s quilts now comfort people around the world through Lutheran World Relief.

After Richard passed away in 2011, Marvene moved to New Berlin to be close to her daughters. She was a member at Blessed Savior Lutheran Church in New Berlin and was active in quilting at the church.

Marvene was preceded in death by her husband Richard, her mother Dorothy Bee (when Marvene was just nine years old), her father Paul Bee, stepmother Avis Smith-Wanless, and a stepbrother Robert Wanless. She is survived by her brother Thomas Bee, stepbrother Wayne Wanless and daughters Jean Bjelde, Avis Browne (Marty), and Sheila Stark (Tim). She has three grandchildren—Lauren Combs (Will), Ryan Browne, and Tommy Stark (Amanda). She was blessed with three great-grandchildren, Alayna Rose Combs, Miabella Ray Stark and Riley Thomas Stark.

Those who knew and loved her best will remember her as a great card player, a faithful letter writer, and a sweet, gentle, generous and hard-working woman. Some will remember her also for the wonderful meals she could put together on a moment’s notice and especially for those chocolate chip cookies that seemed to arrive in the mail just as they were needed most.

Funeral services will be held at Pratt Memorial Chapel, 120 North Park Street, Richland Center, WI on Saturday, February 8 at noon with visitation beginning at 11 am. Pastor Zachary DeArmond from Blessed Savior Lutheran will officiate the service. Livestream of the service can be viewed at https://www.prattfuneralservice.com/livestream/livestream-service. Burial at the Czechs National Cemetery in Champion Valley, Yuba will follow the service at approximately 1:30 pm.
