George O. Tyner, Jr.

George Orris Tyner, Jr., a retired construction worker, passed away on January 13, 2025 peacefully after a 2-year battle with dementia and cancer. George was born on September 27, 1957 in Nashville, Tennessee. George was a 1975 graduate of Bayside High School and received his Bachelor of Arts in Real Estate and Corporate Finance from Old Dominion University in 1980. He married his high school sweetheart on December 3, 1980.

George was an amazing contractor and owned Tyner Construction for 35 years. He worked on numerous houses throughout the Hampton Roads area. He also helped to restore the Historic Chamberlin Hotel in Hampton. He volunteered his time in the 90s as the civic league president for his neighborhood in Lakeview Park, at the Hermitage Elementary PTA building and setting up carnival games, as well as having a hand in Little Creek Baseball, where he was a coach, field maintenance director and commissioner of the league.

George would help out anyone who needed it and loved to have a good time. You could always count on him to be a friend if you needed, and he was always the life of the party. Some of his fondest memories were playing sports with friends growing up, as George was big into baseball and football with his brother. He also thoroughly enjoyed watching his sons play baseball and his daughter play soccer and field hockey.

George is preceded in death by his father George Tyner Sr., his mother, Homer, his brother, Paul and his wife of 31 years, Maureen. George is survived by his sons, Shane Tyner and Bryce Tyner and his daughter, Samantha Hathaway (Brandon Hathaway, husband). He is also survived by his 3 grandchildren, Brantley, Rylee and Wesley. He loved them more than anything and would always brag about them to anyone he ran into.

George wished to not have a funeral service. Instead, he wanted everyone to have a “cold one” for him and remember the fun times they had together. His family is at peace knowing he is reunited with his high school sweetheart and the love of his life, Maureen, who he has missed deeply for the last 13 years.

We would like to thank Colonial Health and Rehab as well as Mary, Kalene, Penny and Erin at Trinity Hospice. We are forever grateful for the love you showed him during his final months. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.hollomon-brown.com
