Mi Ki Kan

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mi Ki Kan, a man of many talents and a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, cousin, teacher, and friend. Mi Ki, son of Yue Ying Kwan (mother) and Maytin Kan (father) was born in Guangzhou (Canton), China on August 22, 1938. Mi Ki passed away peacefully at home on January 7, 2025 in Markham, Ontario, Canada, at the age of 86, surrounded by his loving family.

Born during wartime in China, Mi Ki grew up in a time when food was scarce. Despite the hardships of his early years, he worked tirelessly to support his family and rose above his circumstances with grace. His gentle and kind actions reflected his unwavering commitment to his family, ensuring they received the education and comfort he never had.

Mi Ki was known for his cunning wit, artistry in drawing, painting, and photography, and his role as the main chef in the household. A popular teacher in both Hong Kong and Canada, he inspired many students with his passion and dedication. He also preserved and expanded the legacy of his father, Maytin Kan, by sharing his watercolor art with future generations.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Susan (nee Poon); daughter, Karen Kan G (James Gann); son, Jenghiz Kan; daughter, Cynthia (Dean) Mamer; grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Dustin Mamer; sister, Nancy (Ken) Lam and several brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Yue Ying Kwan, Maytin Kan and two brothers.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers, hospital and palliative care staff, and the special friends who supported Mi Ki and Susan through thick and thin. They also wish to thank St. Patrick’s Parish for their spiritual care and kindness during this difficult time.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick’s Parish on 5633 Highway #7 in Markham, for family and close friends on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 at 10:30am. There will be no visitation prior to this date. Following the mass, the immediate family only will go to Holy Cross Cemetery for the Final Rite of Committal.

Mi Ki requests to "see people attending church mass wearing colours". In lieu of flowers or gifts of condolence (帛金), we kindly suggest making a memorial donation to St. Patrick’s Parish or to a charity of your choice in memory of Mi Ki.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his creativity, humour, and the unconditional love he gave to all who knew him.
