<p>Joseph Valentino DeSensi, 95, of Hagerstown, MD, went Home on January 4, 2025. </p><p><br></p><p>Joseph was born on November 20, 1929, in Washington, PA to the late Pasquale and Concetta (DiVincenzo) DeSensi. He graduated from Washington High School, Washington, PA (1947), Hagerstown Junior College, Hagerstown, MD (1978, Associate Degree), and Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, WV (1981, Regents Bachelor of Art). He served 30 years in the United States Navy, retiring with rank of Chief Petty Officer. He held many positions during his Naval career, including aviation machinist mate, master at arms sergeant, honor guard, and recruiter. While enlisted in the Navy, he earned a Meritorious Service Medal, Gold Wreath Award, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, twelve letters of commendation, six letters of appreciation and several Good Conduct Medals. </p><p><br></p><p>Joseph also volunteered at Halfway Fire Department where he affectionately earned the nickname “Bingo Joe”, volunteered at Hagerstown Junior College, was employed as a substitute teacher in Washington County Public Schools, MD, and was an officer and counselor at Maryland Correctional Institute, Hagerstown, MD. </p><p><br></p><p>In recent years, Joseph enjoyed reading the newspaper, completing jigsaw puzzles, drinking hot chocolate, and spending time with family. He valued education and people. He could make a friend, offer a word of practical advice, or tell a joke to anyone he met. </p><p><br></p><p>In addition to his parents and grandmother, Maria DeSensi, he is preceded in death by beloved wife, Betty Jane (Murray) DeSensi, to whom he was married 65 years at the time she went Home in 2017, and by his seven older siblings, Vincent, John (K.I.A. WWII), Anthony, Anna Martha (Clem), Mary (Harrison), Frank, and Carmen DeSensi, and his sons-in-law Mark G. Osterman and Albino Lamanna. </p><p><br></p><p>He is survived by his daughter, Pamela S. DeSensi-Crawford, son, Michael J. DeSensi, grandchildren, Michael L. Osterman, Emily Osterman-Cooper, and Kimberly Osterman Stout, great-granddaughters Jaysa and Jasmyn Pearl. </p><p><br></p><p>Burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. </p><p><br></p><p>Memorial donations may be made to Washington County Commission on Aging, 535 E. Franklin Street, Hagerstown, MD 21740.</p>
