<p>Ruth Marie SanJurjo died January 5, 2025 at home after a brief illness. Matriarch of her family, she will be remembered as a strong independent woman.&nbsp;<br> Born September 12, 1937 in the Bronx, NY to Edith Epstein and Joseph Goldstein, she was raised by her mother and stepfather Lewis Steadman. In 1950 she moved to Lee with her family, graduating from Lee High School class of 1954. Ruth returned to New York City to attend the Mount Sinai School of Nursing at 16, graduating in 1957. She went on to have a 56 year career as a registered nurse.&nbsp;<br> It was at Mount Sinai that she met her husband, the late Hugo P. SanJurjo. They married on July 4, 1959 and raised their children in Queens, NY until moving to Lee in 1968. Ruth lived in her home on Theresa Terrace from 1969 until her passing.&nbsp;<br> Ruth's nursing career started at Mount Sinai in New York. A lifetime night nurse, she was director of nursing at Lee Nursing Home and worked at both Berkshire Medical Center and Hillcrest Hospital, retiring from full time work in 2000. She worked part time at the Village at Laurel Lake until 2012.&nbsp;<br> Ruth enjoyed taking trips, cooking for a house full of people, and mastering the New York Times crossword puzzle. Her greatest joy was being a grandmother and bisabuela to her grands and great grands.&nbsp;<br> She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Hugo P. SanJurjo, her sister Betty Eisenberg, her brother John "Red" Steadman, and her son-in-law William S. Winn.&nbsp;<br> Ruth is survived by her son Scott C. SanJurjo and partner Lucien Allaire of Lowell, MA; her daughter Torey Winn and partner Mike Hoffman of Dalton, MA; her granddaughter Audra Winn and husband Sean Leahy of Northampton, MA; her grandson William H. Winn and fiancé Jessica Long of Lee; and her great-grandchildren Esme and Cyrus Leahy of Northampton, MA. Also survived by three sisters-in-law: Janet Steadman, Eva SanJurjo Morales and Candida SanJurjo.&nbsp;<br> Ruth showed up for her family and will be dearly missed. Memorial service will be private. There will be no calling hours.&nbsp; In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Lee Food Pantry.
