<p><p>MORTON – Rev. Daniel “Dan” B. Tuhy, 79, formerly of Morton, passed away on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at Accolade Healthcare of East Peoria.</p><p>Dan was born on March 15, 1945 to Bohuslav Tuhy and Enka Tuhy (Hirko) in Newark, New Jersey.</p><p>As a teenager, Dan left home to attend prep school in Milwaukee in preparation for the seminary track. As part of the junior college seminary program, Daniel majored in Hebrew and Classical Greek at Concordia College in Ann Arbor Michigan. To pay for his tuition, Dan worked each summer at Central Steel in Detroit. During his college years Dan became active in the Civil Rights Movement and attended the March on Washington in August 1963.</p><p>He continued his seminary journey at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, where he met his future wife, Rachel Bach. Dan returned to Detroit for his pastoral internship where he and other clergy served the community during the Detroit Uprising. Dan served on several Community Boards working alongside Civil Rights leaders including Rosa Parks and Carl Levin. Dan completed his pastoral studies at Hamma School of Theology in Ohio. Dan and Rachel were married in October of 1971, shortly after Dan’s ordination into the [then] Lutheran Church of America. Dan and Rachel would return to St. Louis in the mid-1970s where Daniel would continue his work for civil rights integrating Mizpah Lutheran Church.</p><p>Dan later obtained a master’s degree in counseling from Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois, after which he served in a counseling capacity at Lutheran Social Services of Illinois and Youth Farm. During his 50 years of religious service, Dan served as a parish pastor at various calls through the Midwest, a supply preacher, and an intentional interim. His proudest pastoral memory was being invited to preach at the 75th anniversary of Mizpah Lutheran Church, where he was recognized for his role in growing the Church through racial integration and local outreach.</p><p>Dan enjoyed Cardinals baseball and Bears football. He had a deep love of trains and music, particularly barbershop quartets and Handel’s Messiah. He also had a love of camping and served on the board of Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center. Family and friends will remember his gregarious personality, generous spirit, and irreverent, insightful sense of humor.</p><p>Dan is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rachel Tuhy; his daughter, Sarah Tuhy; two sons, Joshua Tuhy and Micah (Jennyfer) Tuhy; granddaughter, CharlieAnn Tuhy; and his sister Judy Tuhy Kirkpatrick.</p><p>A funeral service will be held at Advent Lutheran Church in Morton, where he served faithfully for 13 years, at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 10, 2025. Visitation will be held from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m., prior to the service at the church.</p><p>In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lutheran Outdoor Ministry Center (lomc.org) in Oregon, Illinois.</p><p>Knapp-Johnson Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Morton is handling arrangements.</p><p>To leave an online condolence for the family visit www.knappjohnson.com.</p></p>
