Kent Douglas “Guy” Mitchell: A Life Well-Lived

Kent Douglas Mitchell, affectionately known as “Guy,” age 76, of St. Charles, passed away on October 17, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted husband of 53 years to Barb, Kent was an inspiring father to Jason and Erin and a proud father-in-law to Lydia and Kyle. He cherished his role as Grandpa to Lainey, James, Rylan, and Brooklyn and embraced his recent title as a great-grandfather to Anthony. Known for his quick wit, infectious humor, and unforgettable dance moves, Kent’s spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of those who loved him.

A decorated veteran of the U.S. Army, Kent served his country with honor during the Vietnam War, serving mostly in Germany. He didn’t speak much of his time in the Army but was proud of his service. He was a true farmer, spending 51 joyful years on his beloved hobby farm outside St. Charles where he and Barb raised their family. Together they enjoyed working on the property, traveling, and cruises.

Kent’s passion for woodworking was evident in the many whirligigs, birdhouses, trinkets, clocks, and even a 7-foot sasquatch that he crafted with love. His enthusiasm for animal husbandry, gardening, and creativity inspired all fortunate to know him.

Though he had little love for fishing, Kent patiently taught his kids and grandkids the art of waiting for a bite, often with a knowing twinkle in his eye and a chuckle at their antics. He filled their lives with laughter and his famous flapjacks, always reminding them that “all you can do is the best you can do.” He believed in seizing opportunities in both life and his beloved card games, often saying, “If you don’t get set once in a while, you aren’t bidding enough”—useful advice in cards and in life.

A casual Minnesota Twins fan, Kent dedicated his Sundays to cheering for the Minnesota Vikings and “whoever played the Packers.” “This could be the year,” he’d say with unwavering optimism, and indeed, it always could be, but never quite was. An animal lover at heart, he was never far from his beloved dogs, cats, and chickens—each rooster proudly named after a U.S. President.

Kent was a lifelong learner and had the remarkable ability to fix just about anything (though it might not stay fixed for long). He relished life’s simple pleasures, from Wisconsin cheese curds to Sand Prairie watermelon, and taught us all to appreciate every moment. While he may no longer be with us, his spirit lives on in our laughter, our stories, and those wonderfully unique dance moves that will forever be a cherished memory to those fortunate enough to witness them.

A celebration of Kent’s life will be held on Thursday, October 24, at Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview, Minnesota, with visitation starting at noon and a brief service at 2:00 p.m., followed by burial at Hillside Cemetery in St. Charles. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to Fools Five for Cancer Research in Lewiston, Minnesota, where Kent and Barb contribute to the silent auction.

Rest in peace, Kent, Guy, Grandpa, Dad, Husband, Friend, and Neighbor. You were truly one of a kind, and your absence is felt deeply. As you often said: schnitzel.
