Philip A. Clayton

Philip Clayton, age 69, passed away on October 4, 2024 after a courageous battle against cancer. Born in Cali, Colombia, he was the son of the late E.W. and Myrtle Baker Clayton. He was also predeceased by a sister, Lynne Clayton Turner.

He is survived by his wife, Trish, and son Alex (Shelly); grandchildren Ayla Clayton, Julie Martin, and Philip Clayton III; niece Viki Sweat and nephew Clayton Turner.

Philip graduated from Clemson University in 1977, and worked as an accountant and internal auditor for the Greenville Hospital System. In 1980, he began working as Controller for Conway Hospital, a move that impacted the remainder of his career. He over the years, he served as Chief Financial Officer, Executive Vice President, and earned a Master’s degree in Healthcare Administration. In 1992 Philip was named President and CEO of Conway Medical Center. He served in that position for over 25 years, leading an organization of talented and dedicated employees as they provided healthcare for Conway and surrounding areas. He retired in December 2017.

Philip and Trish married in 1977, and were blessed to have 47 years together. They took family trips to the Florida Keys for fishing, and made many trips to Clemson for football games. Golf was his favorite pastime, and he and “The Clayton Group” spent most Wednesday afternoons on the links at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. His other interests included cooking, music, traveling, and reading.

Although Philip received awards and recognition as a healthcare executive, he would want to be remembered for the way he lived: as a faithful and loving husband, a supportive and caring father and grandfather, a loyal friend, a good son, a devoted “dog dad”, and as a man of character and honesty.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, October 7 at McMillan Small Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 1:50PM prior to the service at McMillan-Small Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Clayton Family Endowment, Conway Medical Center Foundation, 300 Singleton Ridge Rd., Conway, SC 29528.

.
