Mary Ann Leitz-Cameron, also know as Mary Cameron, passed from this life and into her eagerly anticipated after-life on September 24, 2024 in the care of Madrone Hospice House in Yreka, California. She was eighty-three years old.

Mary was born to Edward D. Leitz and Annette Louise Henning Leitz of Minneapolis, Minnesota. They preceded Mary in death. Mary is survived by a brother, Robert Leitz of Minnesota, a loving daughter (and her best friend) Kari Burke of Texas, a son James M. Jorgensen of Oregon, her husband, Robert D. Cameron of Montague, California, as well as a number of step-children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her loving friends, Linda Sadler, Barbara Evans, and Jean Graeber.

Mary was an auditor/accountant during her career at Western Farm Credit Association and traveled the seven western states in that capacity. In post-retirement, she and Robert moved to Siskiyou County’s rural Montague in 1998. Mary saw a need for people to have competent first responders come at their hour of need in the area, and knew she would one day need such care, and that it was not being done properly. She became a volunteer fire fighter and EMT first responder with the Mount Shasta Vista Volunteer Fire Company. She ultimately became Fire Chief, and was instrumental in improving service to our rural area by modernizing the department and securing many grants and training opportunities for her crew. Mary was also the President of the Siskiyou County Volunteer Fire Chief’s Association for a number of years. She had the respect of all who knew her in that capacity. She served the fire fighting community for over twenty years and was on countless fire, rescue, medical, and other calls.

Mary is missed. At her request, there will be no services. Her ashes will be scattered by her family. As she was a long time supporter of the Yreka Rescue Ranch, please consider a small donation in her memory to save more of the dogs she loved so well, especially Sally, who was waiting for her to come.
