<p>Pastor Kurt Grunewald passed from this life to eternal life on September 28, 2024.<br></p><p><br></p><p>He was born on July 22, 1946, the second of four children, to Lloyd and Margie née Schleicher Grunewald in Watertown, Wisconsin, and was baptized into the Christian faith soon after. He attended St. Mark’s Lutheran School, Northwestern Prep, and Northwestern College, all in Watertown. He then went on to the Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon to continue his studies to become a pastor in the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.</p><p><br></p><p>During his studies, he met and married Sara Woelfle on August 9, 1969. Together, they raised five children, serving parishes in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio (1972-1980), Mt. Calvary, Wisconsin (1980-1997), and Elkhorn, Wisconsin (1997-2009). When he retired, he, Sara, and Sara’s mother, Beverly Woelfle, moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to live in a new addition to their daughter’s house. During this time, he served as a vacancy pastor in various parishes as they awaited their new shepherds and taught Bible information classes at St. Marcus. Kurt came full circle when he and Sara moved back to Watertown, Wisconsin, in 2017.</p><p><br></p><p>Kurt was active at his home church, St. Mark’s, serving communion and doing shut-in visits until his health dictated otherwise. He also prepared meditations, gleaned from his former sermons, for the WELS prison ministry.</p><p><br></p><p>Kurt leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Sara; children Rebecca (Reverend Dr. Paul) Steinberg, Stephen, Reverend Matthew (Rebecca), Daniel, and Benjamin. His beloved grandchildren are Jacob (Elise) Bush, Luke Steinberg, Jonathan Steinberg, Mackencia Steinberg, Mackenson Steinberg, Joshua Steinberg,&nbsp;Chloe Grunewald, Andrew Steinberg, Jagger Grunewald, Aaron Grunewald, David Grunewald, and Isaac Grunewald. Great-grandchildren are Anita and Henrik Bush. Also, his sister Eleanor Braun, his brother Frank Grunewald, his sister-in-law Vicky Grunewald, his sister-in-law Ann Anastasio, and his brother-in-law Dr. Michael Anastasio. Kurt also leaves behind a vast extended family of nieces, nephews, and their families.</p><p><br></p><p>He was preceded in death by his parents, his mother-in-law, Beverly Woelfle, his father-in-law, Clarence Woelfle, his brother, Fred, sister-in-law, Cathy Grunewald, and his brother-in-law, Michael Braun.</p><p><br></p><p>A Christian memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, at 3 p.m. at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Rev. James Backus officiating. Family and friends may gather at the church from 2 p.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorials to be designated to St. Mark's Lutheran School. Hafemeister Funeral Home and Cremation Service is serving the family.
