Joseph Thomas Wiliams passed away peacefully on September 22nd surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Newark, NJ to the late Thomas Francis and Helen Marie (nee Flynn) Williams, Joe attended St Ann’s School in Newark. He then went on to high school at Seton Hall Preparatory School, class of 1954, which had a profound influence on his life and was the beginning of his love of all things Seton Hall. He took the SHP “brotherhood” to heart and, while Joe was an only child, he soon had brothers in Phil McGonegal and the late Jerry Egan.

Following high school, Joe attended Seton Hall University as part of the ROTC program, where he graduated in 1959. Upon graduation, he married Joan Connors and served in the Army from 1959-1961, reaching the rank of First Lieutenant. He continued in the Army reserves until 1964. Joe later returned to his beloved Seton Hall and received his MBA in 1966. Joe was proud to be a pirate and truly bled blue as a diehard fan and season ticket holder of SHU basketball.

Joe settled first in South Orange just steps from SHU and then eventually in Maplewood. He was an active member of Our Lady of Sorrows Church and South Orange Knights of Columbus where he served as Grand Knight. He was named Catholic Man of the Year by the Holy Name Society in 1995. He also coached little league for the scrappy “Businessmen” and “Chamber of Commerce” and taught CCD for many years. After raising his children and retiring from his HR consulting business, Connors Williams Assoc., Joe moved to Brick, which he lovingly referred to as “God’s country”. He resided in Brick for many years and was an active member of the Church of St Martha and the Society of St Vincent de Paul. He served as the first president of the St Martha conference of St Vincent de Paul, as well as the treasurer of the society’s Ocean County District Council, and diocesan director of youth and young adult development. Joe proudly served as the Society of St Vincent de Paul Trenton diocesan council president from 2013-2019. When not volunteering or spending time with his family, Joe could be found on the golf course.

Joe was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Helen (nee Flynn) Williams and his in-laws Edward and Honora (nee Morris) Connors, sister-in-law Ann Krenkowitz and husband Stanley, as well as Jerry and Barbara Egan. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Joan (nee Connors), his son Kevin Williams and wife Suzy Beth, daughters, Ellen Rosengarten and husband Spencer, and Maureen Hicks and husband Chris, grandchildren Patrick and Erin Grace Williams, Honora Rosengarten, and Casey and Courtney Hicks, sister-in-law Eileen D’Alessio and husband Al, Phil McGonegal and wife Carol as well as several beloved nieces and nephews.

Joe firmly believed that when you were down on your luck or on your worst day, the best way to lift yourself up was to lift someone else up. In that spirit, we ask that in lieu of flowers you donate to the Society of St Vincent de Paul or Seton Hall University Pirate Blue Athletic Fund.

A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 25th from 9am-10:30am at O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Rd.
