Dr. Harry Everette Burrow, Jr.

Born on July 9, 1934, in Hammond, LA, Harry Everette Burrow, Jr.’s dream from early on was to become a physician. He focused his time and energy in pursuing that goal. Spending his childhood in Gulfport, Harry left at age 16 to begin his undergraduate work at Ole Miss. By the age of 19, he was accepted into the University of Tennessee’s medical school. The only diploma he ever received was his medical degree in 1957 shortly before his 23rd birthday.

After a one-year internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans, Harry started his medical career in 1958 as a general practitioner in Pascagoula, opening his first office on Ingalls Avenue, across from Jerry Lee’s Grocery. Despite being married to Shirley Clark, with whom he already had a young daughter, Harry enlisted in the US Army in 1962 as a Captain assigned to the Medical Corps. While stationed at Fort Jackson in New Orleans, he turned his stint in the Army into an Ear, Nose and Throat residency at Tulane University Medical School. Harry (having by now acquired a baby boy) returned to Pascagoula in 1967 becoming the first ENT surgeon in Jackson County. Before retiring in 2003, he had treated over 85,000 patients, and had been elected twice by his peers as Chief of the Medical Staff at Singing River Hospital.

When he married the love of his life, Jacqueline (“Jackie”) Walker Millette in 1974, he gained seven additional children, and would quickly tell you he would have loved to have had more. Harry was at times strict, but equally loving and generous. He expected much from everyone around him, especially his children, but no more than he expected of himself. He served his community in quiet ways, for example, being a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks for almost 70 years, and a friend to Reverend Bill Barton and his Home of Grace.

Harry passed away on August 18, 2024, predeceased by his parents, Harry E. Burrow and Myrtle (“Stevie”) Burrow, his older sister, Marguerite Shacklett Taylor, his younger brother, John Burrow, his beloved Jackie, his daughter, Sharon Millette Kramer, his son, Mark Millette, and his grandson, Stuart Sutherland.

Harry is survived by a large and loving family, starting with his daughter, Shirley Reynolds (John) and his son, Stephen Burrow (Mary). He is also survived by Theodore Millette (Gail), Terrance (“Terry”) Millette (Trudy), Lesley Millette Sutherland, Michele Millette McGehee (David), and Lauren Millette. He leaves his beloved eighteen grandchildren (all of whom called him “Doc”): Amy Dunn, Allison Reynolds, Victoria Burrow, Phillip Burrow, Elizabeth Burrow, Evan Burrow, Hunter Kramer, Catherine Lawhorn, Theodore Millette, Matthew Millette, Rachel Millette, Walker Rediehs, Emily Harriett, Ian Sutherland, Daniel McGehee, Brittany Welch, Natalie Meznar, and Andrew McGehee.

We all thank the caregivers Dad/Doc has had over the past four years, starting with his honorary daughter, Nadean Watson. She met Dad shortly after she started working at the hospital. When his health declined, Nadean took wonderful care of (and put up with) him, as well as nursing Jackie during her final years. Dad’s other caregivers, for whom we are all grateful, include Ashley Rogers, Frandreda Kinn, Marina Causey, Mary Harper, and Keeisher Wilson.

Visitation will be at Heritage Funeral Home in Moss Point, MS starting at 10:30am on August 24, 2024. A memorial service will be held at Heritage thereafter starting at noon. A private interment will be held at Southern Memorial Park in Biloxi, MS after the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Harry’s name to the Home of Grace (https://www.homeofgrace.org/)

Heritage Funeral Home, locally owned and operated in Moss Point/ Escatawpa, MS, is honored to serve the family of Dr. Harry Everette Burrow, Jr.
