MaryAnn Boynton Henkle
<p>MaryAnn Boynton Henkle, age 93, passed away peacefully in her loving family’s arms on July 25, 2024, in Auburn, CA, after an extraordinary life. She was born May 18, 1931, to Melbourne Wells Boynton and Mary Smalley Boynton in Chicago, IL.</p><p><br></p><p>Although her military family moved to numerous locations in her first 13 years, she loved spending every summer at magical Little Point Sable, Michigan. She was a true “Pointer” with her dad and mom getting married in a double ceremony in the LPS church her dad and grandfather helped build.</p><p><br></p><p>Her bright, resilient and precocious nature helped her make friends easily and she enjoyed art classes at the Art Institute of Chicago where, at age nine, she sat after class under the iconic bronze lion statues and “roared” at passersby while waiting to be picked up.</p><p><br></p><p>Marrying Robert “Bob” Brintnall Henkle in 1951, she started a family, graduating from the University of Evansville in Fine Arts in 1965. In addition to creating many cherished paintings and sculptures, she taught art in Evansville, IN, and English as a Second Language in Fullerton, CA, helping launch the careers of many grateful immigrants. A lifelong learner, she taught herself Spanish, completed landscape architecture, Romanian and Russian language classes, and enjoyed OLLIE continuing education courses. She was an avid reader and had over 3200 books!</p><p><br></p><p>MaryAnn loved taking her children on adventures. Once in August ‘66, she took her kids and their eager basset hound on an epic journey to sleep on the moonlit dunes at Silver Lake, Michigan – with no tent!</p><p><br></p><p>She loved sailing and spent many days boating on Lake Michigan and Kentucky Lake. MaryAnn was extremely active in her community and church, publishing the church newsletter, capturing myriad photos, singing in the choir and playing guitar at fundraisers. Music was an important part of her life, and she instilled that love deeply in her children.</p><p><br></p><p>Also important in her life were family pets (including many ‘rescues’) which resulted in the “Henkle Zoo”. MaryAnn enjoyed watching bluebirds, butterflies and hummingbirds in her garden in Buena Park and established a butterfly waypoint at her local church to help the struggling Monarch population. Twenty years ago, she founded her church’s Blessing of the Animals event, and it is still held every October at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church in Buena Park, CA.</p><p><br></p><p>MaryAnn is survived by her children: Mel Henkle, Carolan “Casey” Henkle, and Nancy (Mark) Lichtle and 2 grandchildren, Scott Henkle and Taylor Lichtle along with many cousins and other dear family and friends. She was pre-deceased by her husband of 70 years, Bob Henkle, and grandson, Gary Winslow Henkle.</p><p><br></p><p>The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale Auburn for their care, love, and support for MaryAnn over the past three years.</p><p><br></p><p>Her spirit and creativity will live on forever – in all of us lucky enough to have known our amazing, inspiring and mighty MaryAnn.
