<p>Joseph Anthony Royal</p><p>June 9, 1945 – July 30, 2024</p><p>Middletown NY</p><p> Joseph “Joe” Royal departed this life surrounded by family on Tuesday July 30, 2024 at Garnet Medical Center in Middletown NY at the age of 79. He was born on June 9, 1945 to the Late Lillie Mae Faison and Lloyd Royal.</p><p>Joe enlisted in the United States Army in July 1966, served in the Vietnam War and received an Honorable Discharge in September 1969.</p><p> Joe retired from the Middletown Psychiatric Center, Middletown NY after 25 years of service. He was one of the founding fathers and lead singer of the “The Shallows Acapella Group” and “The Shallows Oldies Band”. Joe was a regular at all the sporting events in Middletown to cheer the kids on. All the coaches and kids knew Joe as “Pops” or “Grandpa”. You would always see him on the sidelines cheering the kids on and giving the refs grief for those bad calls they always made.</p><p>He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 32 years Anita Thompson-Royal his son Curtis Royal and daughter in law Cheryl Cohen of Middletown NY. Granddaughter Briana Cohen, Grandsons Joseph (JoJo), Corey and Jayden all of Middletown NY and stepdaughter Styleen Allen of Middletown. Five Sisters, Deloris Merritt, Antoinette McMillian, Nancy Faison all of Newburgh NY, Julia Faison of Charlotte NC and Carrie Harris of New Haven CT, Three Brothers Robert Fryer of Utica NY, Jerry Faison of Albany NY and Timothy Faison of Kansas City KS.</p><p>His Mother Lillie Mae Faison, Father Lloyd Royal, Brother Ernest Royal and Sister Leslie Patterson predeceased him.</p><p> Joe had a true sense of fashion and took great pride in always looking “sharp”! He was so proud of his grandkids and loved supporting them at all their events. Joe was quite the man and well known for his singing, love of the oldies and love of his family and friends. He was especially proud of all his grandkids. We will miss him greatly. There will always be a spot saved for “Pops at all the sporting events in Middletown.</p><p> Services will be from 5 to 8 pm on Wednesday, August 7 at Applebee-McPhillips Funeral Home, Inc, 130 Highland Avenue, Middletown, NY 10940. </p><p><br></p>June 9, 1945 - July 30, 202406/09/194507/30/2024
