Michael Guffey, 78 of Watertown, SD passed away Thursday, July 25, 2024 in Watertown.

Memorial service will be held at 11:00am Monday, August 5, 2024 at Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel. *Visitation one hour prior to the service.

Michael Boyd Guffey (Mick) was born on March 29, 1949 in Clark, SD to Boyd V. Guffey and Dorothy Anne Guffey (Kranz). His schooling was in Clark, SD where he graduated in 1964. He graduated from Northern State College in 1968 with a degree in Music Education. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle. He passed away on July 25, 2024 at the age of 78.

Mick was united in marriage to Jean Adele Jensen at First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, SD on July 17, 1971. They raised two children; Jennifer Erin (1975) and Sean Michael (1979).

Mick taught music at Leola School for 33 years. He started students as beginners in 5th grade, giving lessons and encouragement. He taught Jr. high music education, which proved to be a frustration! (He might say, “Hats off to educators of this age group!” He had similar feelings towards drummers. ) While he taught vocal music at times, his forte was instrumental music. Highlights included All-State Band, contests, concerts, and that feeling of pride when his students were successful. He directed many musicals including “Oklahoma,” “You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown,” “South Pacific,” etc.

He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Leola and Holy Name in Watertown. He belonged to several musical organizations. He enjoyed his longtime affiliation with the Boy Scouts of America where he obtained the ranks of Eagle Scout, Order of the Arrow, and Ad + Altare Dei. He sang with the Elks Chorus for 33 years. He was a member of the Trinklied Singers (his college folk group, where members, to this day, remain a group of lifelong friends.) They’ve shared so many memories and laughs! He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and visits to the Black Hills…always a favorite destination. Mick had passionate ideals but could let the rest roll off his back. He was a man of few words, but his t-shirts said it all. He possessed a great, dry sense of humor.

Mick leaves behind the love of his life - his wife of 53 years, Jean; his children, Jen of Juno Beach, FL; Sean (Lindsay) Guffey, his grandchildren, Liam and Grayson of Clive, IA; sister-in-law, Karen Guffey of Fort Myers, FL; and several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Michael was preceded in death by his beautiful grandson, Dylan Michael Guffey; parents, Boyd and Dorothy Guffey; grandparents, Vern and Lula Guffey; grandparents Nicholas and Anna Kranz; brother, James Guffey; and parents in law, Jack and Winnie Jensen.

May the Lord bless his memory among family and friends.

The family of Michael Guffey thanks you for your prayers and support.

Wight & Comes Funeral Chapel serving the family ~ www.wightandcomes.com
