<p>Heaven welcomed home, Joyce Faye Greene Byrd, age 83, of the Woodlawn Community. Joyce passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2024, at Mission Hospital – McDowell.</p><p><br></p><p>Joyce was born on September 30, 1940, in McDowell County, NC, to the late Todd McKinley Greene and Bessie Alma Hollifield Greene. She grew up in a loving and close-knit family, alongside her seven siblings. Joyce was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Lena Greene Huff, who was married to Jim Huff and resided in Johnson City, TN. Her brothers Garland Greene, married to Lillian; Marshall Greene; Finley Greene of Marion; Ray Greene, married to Norma and also of Johnson City, TN; and Jack Greene, married to Mary Lou of Marion, also predeceased her. In addition, Joyce's parents-in-law, Harvey Byrd and Carrie Mace Byrd of Marion, preceded her in death, marking the passing of an entire generation that significantly influenced her life.</p><p><br></p><p>Joyce's early years were marked by her education at North Cove High School, from which she graduated in 1958. She was known for her dedication and hard work, qualities that she carried into her professional life. Joyce began her career at American Thread, a prominent textile company, where she demonstrated her strong work ethic and attention to detail. She then moved on to Armored Garments, further honing her skills in a different industry. Eventually, Joyce found her calling at McDowell Hospital, where she served as the human resource coordinator. Her role at the hospital was vital, as she managed employee relations, benefits, and other HR responsibilities with compassion and efficiency. Joyce's dedication to her work and her colleagues left a lasting impact, and she remained at McDowell Hospital until her retirement in 2003.</p><p><br></p><p>Faith played a central role in Joyce's life. She was an active member of several churches throughout the years, Woodlawn Baptist Church and Turkey Cove Baptist Church, where she formed deep connections and friendships. She also worshiped at Cross Memorial Baptist Church. Each community provided her with spiritual nourishment and fellowship. In her later years, Joyce embraced modern technology to continue her faith journey, participating virtually with Concord United Methodist Church and New Life Metropolitan Community Church of Hampton Roads, VA.</p><p><br></p><p>Joyce's life was a testament to her strength, dedication, and faith. Her legacy is remembered by those who knew her, reflecting the love and commitment she gave to her family, career, and faith communities.</p><p><br></p><p>Those left behind to cherish Joyce’s memory are her best friend and husband of 65 years, Jimmy Ray Byrd; one son, Mark Ray Byrd (Alberto) of Virginia Beach, VA; one granddaughter, Jordan Byrd-Eveland (Brock) of Indianapolis, IN; one great-grandson, Miles Eveland of Indianapolis, IN; one sister, Ann Greene of Marion; two sisters-in-law, Betty Greene and Bessie Denny both of Marion; special nieces, Lisa Greene and Angela Autrey of Marion; and a whole host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, family, friends, and co-workers (most of whom always received cards every year from Joyce on their birthdays and special days.)</p><p><br></p><p>The family will receive friends from 12:00 pm until 1:00 pm on Friday, July 12, 2024, in the chapel of Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion. A funeral service to celebrate Joyce’s life will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with Rev. Dean Owenby and her son, Rev. Mark Byrd officiating. Interment will follow the service at McDowell Memorial Park.</p><p><br></p>
