<p>Mary Dowens Evernham, 65, of Cornelius, North Carolina, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2024, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Surrounded by family, her body may have been defeated, but not her spirit or her faith. God is smiling now that he has another new angel.</p><p><br></p><p>Mary was born on November 10, 1958 to John and Loretta Dowens in Port Monmouth, New Jersey, where she grew up and spent her childhood. She attended St. Mary’s Grammar School and graduated from Mater Dei High School New Monmouth, New Jersey. Upon graduation she was employed by United Counties Trust Company where she received numerous accolades from her banking clients for excellence in customer service.</p><p><br></p><p>After the birth of her son, Ray J, Mary moved to Cornelius, North Carolina where she spent every day enjoying the sunrise and sunsets at her home on Lake Norman. Ray J was the light of her life and her greatest joy. She will forever walk beside him with love and care.</p><p><br></p><p>To know Mary is to be blessed. She enjoyed life to the fullest, always sharing good times with friends and family. She was an excellent cook who embraced her Irish heritage and enjoyed making her signature dishes of corn beef and cabbage, and her unrivaled pot roast. She was even featured on jars of Dukes Mayonnaise (NC) for some of her favorite recipes.</p><p><br></p><p>Mary’s life would seem short to many, but those who were touched by her will keep her legacy alive.</p><p><br></p><p>Surviving are her son, Raymond John, Cornelius, NC, her brother Robert and his wife Suellen Dowens, Holmdel, NJ, her nephew Robert and his wife Katie Dowens, Cornelius, NC, her nephew Michael Dowens, Holmdel, NJ, her nephew Daniel and his wife Mary Dowens, Pennsville, NJ, her niece Brienne and her husband Matthew Zilinski, Middletown, NJ, her nephew Steven Dowens, Middletown, NJ her great nieces Ellie, Quinn and Piper Zilinski, Everleigh Dowens, and her great nephews Will and Bryant Dowens, Greyson Dowens, JJ, Nathan and Connor Dowens.</p><p><br></p><p>Mary wanted her remains to be scattered along her childhood playground in Port Monmouth and Raritan Bay in a private event, where she said she will finally be home.</p><p><br></p><p>A memorial gathering will be held Saturday, March 2 from 2-4 pm at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home 115 Tindall Rd., Middletown. </p><p><br></p><p>Funeral services will be held at 3:30 pm. </p><p><br></p><p>In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mary’s memory to the American Cancer Society or the Autism Society of North Carolina.</p>
