<p><p>Mrs. Dorothy Ann Kirk Lewis Obituary </p><br> <p>Even in This, We Serve a Mighty God Who is Worthy and Greatly to Be Praised</p><br> <p>Sunrise March 29, 1943</p><br> <p>Sunset January 5, 2024</p> <p> </p> <p>Mrs. Dorothy Ann Lewis, of Oak Ridge, peacefully transitioned from this life at her home surrounded by her family, on Friday, January 5, 2024. She was the second child born to the union of her late parents Mr. Willie B. and Mrs. Addie Pearl Kirk on March 29,1943, in Opelika, Alabama.</p><br> <p>She began school in Opelika, but moved to Oak Ridge at a very early age when her parents moved here to the “Secret City” for her father to work on the Manhattan Project for Union Carbide. As fate would have it, in 1955, Dorothy and her elder brother Frank, became members of the 85 brave black students from the Scarboro Community that were the first to integrate the all-white Oak Ridge School system. The Scarboro 85 broke the color barrier in Robertsville Junior High and Oak Ridge High Schools, and as a result greatly impacted other all-white public schools throughout the Southeast and the nation.</p><br> <p>Affectionately known as Ann, Dot, and Nana, she was a stickler for working hard for desired goals. Over the years, she worked hard and developed many careers; which included housekeeping, nursing, glassblowing, chemical operator, nursery school, and Sunday school assistant. Considering everything, her favorite title and job was Nana and being a grandmother. </p> <p> </p> <p>Her life exhibited service! She dearly loved serving Christ! She was an active and faithful member of the Scarboro Church of Christ and the Guiding Light Circle until her health began to fail. </p> <p> </p> <p>Her favorite hobbies were gardening, singing, cooking, and spending quality time with family. To say that she loved her flowers was an understatement. Almost nothing made her happier than seeing her yard freshly manicured; with the exception of watching JTV in her later days!</p><br> <p>She loved to cook for friends and neighbors, especially her collard greens, yams, and dressing. </p><br> <p>She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings: brothers; Frank Kirk, Roy “Pop” Kirk Sr., Randy “Flakes” Kirk, Jimmy Kirk, sisters; Eloise Kirk and Alberta Cole of Birmingham; sister-in-law, Lois Kirk and late ex-husband, Jimmie Lewis Jr.</p><br> <p>She is survived by and leaves to cherish her sweet memories her devoted daughter, Sylvia “Nette” Rupert of Oak Ridge; son, David Earl (Chevelle) Lewis of Knoxville and the joys of her life; grandchildren, Michael Rupert, Miles Lewis, Maya Lewis, and sistes-in-law, Elizabeth Phipps, Brenda Kirk, Wilma Kirk, and Denise Kirk as well as a host of uncles and her dear Aunt Cali Kirk, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She will be greatly missed and never forgotten by her family, friends, church family, and the many people who knew her in the community. We acknowledge special life-long Sister friends Mary Hawkins, Mary Emma Lee, and Alma Stephens for your years of love and support!</p><br> </p><p><br></p>March 29, 1943 - January 5, 202403/29/194301/05/2024
