Bettie Jean Skelton
<p>Bettie Jean Saunders Skelton of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Saturday, October 14, 2023.<br></p><p>She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, William M. Skelton Jr., in February of 2014. Other family members that precede her in death are her parents, Hammett Liss Saunders and Lena Mae (Pasley) Saunders; brothers, Ralph Liss Saunders of Nashville, Tenn. and Grady Wayne Saunders of Roanoke, Va.; and sisters, Nancy Ann Saunders of Roanoke, Va. And Arnella Mae Saunders of Vinton, Va. Her daughter, Jennifer “Jenny” Marie Skelton passed away in October of 2011.<br></p><p>She is survived by her brother, Edwin Lee Saunders and his wife, Carol, of Roanoke, Va., and sisters-in-law, Barbara Saunders of Nashville, Tenn. and Joanne Saunders of Roanoke, Va.<br></p><p>She is also survived by her son, Judd Skelton and his wife, Jody, of Roanoke, Va.; granddaughter, Veronica; and three great-grandchildren. She also had numerous nieces and nephews.<br></p><p>Bettie was a lifelong resident of Roanoke where she graduated from Jefferson High School. She worked for various employers in the area. Some that she enjoyed the most were at Anderson & Reed; Attorneys Dotson, Pence, Viar & Woodrum; Thomas Rutherfoord, Inc; and WSLS-TV where she met her future husband.<br></p><p>Bettie’s greatest joys came from baking and knitting. She passed her love of cooking on to her children. She entered the sweaters she knitted in local competitions that she often won. Bettie was most recently a member of the Church of the Holy Spirit. They have been so very loving to her and her family in her final years. Thanks to the LEM team for visiting with her every Sunday. Bettie's last years were spent at South Roanoke Nursing Home. She enjoyed her time playing Bingo, singing Hymns and the visits from the Salvation Army.<br></p><p>The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Oakey’s South Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the Church of the Holy Spirit on Merriman Road.
