It is with deep sadness and profound love that we mourn the passing of Ora Warren Alsip of Corbin, KY as he slipped away into his eternal life on October 10th, 2021 at the age of 82 years. Ora was born, raised and spent almost all of his life in Corbin. Here, he embraced and enjoyed life as a mail carrier, photographer, musician but most importantly a husband, father and Poppy.
Ora was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur “Jake” and Ida Hash Alsip, a daughter, Vicky Lynn Alsip and siblings Orita “Trix” Brewer, Irene Marshall, Alma Tatman, Georgia Lynch, Arthur “Homer” Alsip, Paul Alsip, Helen Alsip and Mamie Doris Carter Hupp.
Ora met his one and only true love, Carol, at the Eagle Ballroom in Milwaukee, WI while serving in the US Army. Their first dance was only the beginning as they married, created a wonderful life, soaring through it’s trials and glories, and recently celebrated their 62nd anniversary.
Ora treasured family above everything else. He is survived by his wife Carol; son Mark Alsip and wife Melissa of Lexington, KY; daughter Julie Alsip Bucknam and husband Randy of Richmond, KY; and daughter Kelly Alsip Fischer and husband Jeff of Lexington, KY. Ora cherished every gathering and holiday, raising his family deeply rooted in tradition. He never stopped telling stories or jokes, and he took advantage of every single teachable moment no matter the subject or age of his children. Ora cherished being a Poppy and riding go-karts, hiking, playing games (and winning at checkers) with his grandchildren Sarah Jeck (husband AJ), Miranda White (Skyler), Samuel Bucknam, Lindy Fischer and Addyson Fischer. He took much pride in their accomplishments and rarely missed a soccer game, theatre production, or ballet performance. That love extended to his great-grandchildren Noah, Melody and Gwendolyn. Being the youngest of nine children, Ora was always surrounded by a multitude of very special cousins, nieces and nephews who were always playmates, trouble makers, confidants and friends. Their antics and stories will live on forever and give us all laughter for a lifetime. The family would like to especially thank two nephews who were like children to him and always went out of their way to care for him, Steven Alsip and Patrick Lynch.
A lot of Corbin residents know Ora through his 27 years of service as a Corbin City Mail Carrier. He did more than deliver the mail. He never met a stranger and greeted everyone with a smile, knew their life stories, and regularly checked in on those who needed extra care.
Photography was just one of Ora’s passions. While he enjoyed capturing family moments, nature was his passion. His work has been proudly displayed at many competitions, art galleries, exhibits, state parks, and businesses.
In the early 70s, Ora founded the band the Vagabonds, as a vocalist and guitarist. He played at various locations including Tombstone Junction and even made an appearance on the Cas Walker Show. Most recently, he enjoyed entertaining with his friends at the Corbin Senior Center. Members always cheered, danced, and enjoyed making requests as he pulled from his repertoire of hundreds of songs ranging from his favorite, Merle Haggard, and other country classics, to gospel and hymns. Ora took advantage of singing and playing his beloved guitar for any occasion - whether in a pumpkin field during a fall festival, raising money for Alzheirmer’s Walks, at his home church Steele’s Chapel, or his backyard pavilion for family gatherings. He loved gathering his family for four part harmonies but especially singing “Let it Be Me” with Carol.
This is just a small tribute to an amazing husband, dad and Poppy who loved singing, fishing, gardening, playing checkers, and eating homemade chocolate pies and whipped cream. He was the first person to volunteer to help family and friends in need and the last person giving hugs and leaving a gathering. His patience, compassion, and love will be missed greatly by all who were lucky enough to know him. Just as they lyrics in that beautiful duet, “I bless the day I found you, I want to stay around you, now and forever, let it be me”.
The family would like to thank Baptist Health Corbin, Dr. Hacker, Dr. Troxell and all of the 3 North nurses for their compassionate care.
