Robert B Schultz

Robert Boltz Schultz of New Providence died on August 29th, 2021 at Overlook Hospital in Summit from complications after a breakthrough infection of covid-19. Robert was born on July 15th, 1928 in Reading, Pennsylvania to Barron C. Schultz and Estelle B. Schultz. Bob grew up in West Lawn, Pennsylvania and graduated from Wilson High School where he was senior class president. He served in the US Navy as a weatherman, stationed in lower Manhattan. After completing his service he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Pennsylvania State University. In 1959, Bob came to New Jersey for a job with Bell Laboratories in Whippany, followed by engineering positions with other companies prominent in New Jersey in that era, including Johnson and Johnson, RCA, and Union Carbide. Beginning in 1973, Bob taught machine design and technology at Union County College, from where he retired in 1995. He resided in Berkeley Heights for many years, where he raised his family, and also spent time after retirement at the family home on Long Beach Island. Along with his professional achievements, Bob was active in Faith Lutheran Church in Murray Hill, NJ and the Alliance for a Living Ocean in Beach Haven, NJ. Bob had a lifelong interest in Pennsylvania Dutch food, slang, and folkways from his childhood. Bob also loved photography, and kept a meticulous and wonderful archive of his photographs, including his relatively uncommon 3d ‘stereo’ slides. Sheila Ramsay Schultz, Bob’s wife of 52 years, predeceased him in 2013. He is survived by his daughter Karen M. Bland and partner Jack Dennis of Ship Bottom, NJ and his son Robert R. Schultz and wife Vrinda Khanna of Brooklyn, NY, his grandchildren Lauren and Eric Bland and Uday and Ayla Schultz, his sister Margaret S. Franco of Guilford, CT and many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. His kindness, generosity, fortitude, and unfailing sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Because of the ongoing pandemic, Bob’s family has chosen to postpone a memorial gathering until a future time. The family suggests donations made in Bob’s memory to Lutheran World Relief: <https://lwr.org/ways-to-give">https://lwr.org/ways-to-give or to Save Barnegat Bay: https://www.savebarnegatbay.org/donate/tribute-memorial-gifts/.
