<p>Helen Patricia Yonker, age 92, died Jan. 27, 2021 at Dennett Road Nursing Home, Oakland, MD. </p><p><br></p><p>Born April 21, 1928 in Smithfield RI, she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Rosa Mae (Clarkson) Thurber. She was also preceded in death by her husband John N. Yonker, brothers Clarence Thurber Jr, Alonzo Thurber, and sister Dorothea Palmisciano. </p><p><br></p><p>Mrs Yonker served in the United States Army from 1949 until 1953, serving in Germany and France. While in Europe, she converted to the Catholic faith and was baptized in 1951 at the Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris, France. </p><p><br></p><p>Helen married in 1954 and spent the next 20 years raising 8 children at numerous military bases throughout the world, while her husband John served in the US Army. The family spent time in Colorado, New Jersey, Maryland, Germany, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Japan, and many other locations. </p><p><br></p><p>In the early 1970’s, Helen started a career at the National Security Agency (NSA) as a Telecommunications Specialist. Helen and John both retired from NSA in the early 1990’s and relocated to Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather, bowling, fishing, and boating. </p><p><br></p><p>After the passing of her husband, Helen came back to Maryland, eventually settling in Oakland with her daughter Teresa and her husband Larry, along with their 3 children Larry, Lauren, and Chris.</p><p><br></p><p>Helen was a member of St Peter the Apostle Church where she worshipped and volunteered her time. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles and music. </p><p><br></p><p>She is survived by sisters Nancy Hibbs of North Carolina and Joanne Williams of Rhode Island; children and spouses, Alice and Javad Darbandi, Eileen Amos, Susan and Bob Collins, Teresa and Larry Shue, John Yonker, Kathleen Yonker, Karen (Missy) Rodgers, George and Debbie Yonker; 21 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren. </p><p><br></p><p>The family would like to extend special thanks to Dennett Road Nursing Home for the outstanding care Helen received while a resident.</p><p><br></p><p>Interment at Arlington National Cemetery, alongside her husband John Yonker, will be scheduled at a later date. </p><p><br></p><p>Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 1100 Memorial Dr., Oakland, MD, 21550, is in charge of her arrangements.</p><p><br></p><p>Condolences may be left for the family at www.newmanfuneralhomes.com.</p><p><br></p><p><br></p>April 21, 1928 - January 27, 202104/21/192801/27/2021
