MARZ, Raymond -

(September 8, 1944 - April 25, 2019)

In loving memory of Raymond Marz whose first anniversary occurred April 25th 2020. Deeply loved, sadly missed and always remembered by wife Carol, daughter Michelle, granddaughters Caroline and Isabelle, Siblings Viv and Dan and extended family. One year has passed since my Dad died and time has given me the perspective to memorialize him in written form. My Dad lived with Mental Illness for 25 years and near the end of his life was formally diagnosed with treatment resistant depression. On April 25th 2019, my Dad died by suicide. My family and I have come through a difficult journey and have managed grief and loss in our own way. There is an awareness of judgement and stigma that can unfortunately be associated with suicide and we would like to express our sincere gratitude for those who reached out showing kindness and empathy. Time has provided insight and the ability to focus on positive memories of when my Dad was well, full of fun and creativity. My Dad loved his family and was dedicated to all of us. I believe he would want my mom to know she was the love of his life in good times and in bad. He would want us to know how much he loved his beautiful granddaughters. He was proud of Scott’s successes, hard work in his career in mental health and for his advocacy. He loved his nieces and nephews, brother Dan and sister Viv with a bond that only siblings can speak of. During the most difficult times of my Dad’s illness, my spouse Ben had endless patience and time for my Dad, always making him feel loved and appreciated for which I am unspeakably grateful. He was proud of the home that was built for all of us, with the expectation of allowing my parents to age in place together. My Dad was an incredibly talented person. He was an engineer by occupation and had what seemed to be an effortless ability to incorporate concepts of form and function and to create beautiful things. My Dad had a love of nature perhaps due to his appreciation for function and beauty. One year ago this May we planted a beautiful little Magnolia tree on our family property to honour and memorialize him. I like to think that the bloom on my Dad’s tree is his way of reminding us of the beauty and hope that exists in this world.
