<p>Verna Ruth McKay, 94, of Independence, Iowa died Tuesday morning, July 16, 2013 at the ABCM Rehab Center’s East Campus in Independence, Iowa. </p><p><br></p><p>Verna was born on September 11, 1918, in Mason City, Iowa the daughter of Earl F. and Mary (Johnson) Day. She moved with her family to Independence, Iowa and received her education in the Independence Community Schools, On December 28, 1935 she was married to Chester W. McKay in Chicago, Illinois. The family lived in the Ryan and Winthrop, Iowa areas prior to moving into Independence, Iowa. She enjoyed spending time with her family, swimming, roller-skating, movies, Music, Dancing, and going for a walk.</p><p><br></p><p>She is survived by three children; Beverly (Don) Kerns, Claremont, OK, Carol (John) McDougle, Randall, MN., and Mark (Laurie) McKay, Independence, IA, twelve grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren. </p><p><br></p><p>Verna was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Chester McKay, a son John McKay, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, four sisters; Evelyn Kirsch, Mildred Rager, Virginia Hickox, and Delpha Day, and a brother; Richard Day.</p><p><br></p><p>Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 A.M. Friday at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Independence, Iowa. The Reiff Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements. </p><p><br></p>September 11, 1918 - July 16, 201309/11/191807/16/2013
