Carl Kowalyshyn

A hard working, easy laughing Lover of family, friends and God.

Charlie was born in Ituna into a blended family of Fred and Katherine (Klus) Kowalyshyn on August 16, 1928. Fred, a widower with 4 children, married his widowed sister-in- law, Katherine with 2 children of her own. Together they had 6 more children born into the new family. Fred was a master mechanic, inventor and repair man who was quick to anger and quick to laugh – traits which were passed on to Charlie, who used them throughout his mischievous, adventurous, fun-filled and hard- working life.

The war years were spent working in a steel mill in Hamilton, as being flat-footed kept Charlie out of the army. Returning to Ituna had him sell his farm to use the money to build a house in Melville, for himself and his wife Elaine (Moleski), where they raised their 5 children; between there and the cottage at Crooked Lake.

Charlie engineered on the railroad for his entire career, with his proudest moment having been chosen to drive the train for Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Saskatchewan. It was said Charlie could stop the train on a dime. Travel was a lifelong interest. An initial trip had him and his wife travel through 24 states in 26 days! Further travel included 20 years of motor homing and wintering in Mesa, Arizona, camping with the family, joining friends on trips to Hawaii and Expos in Montreal and Vancouver and fishing in Tobin Lake, and a trip to Europe. Fishing and hunting were activities that Charlie enjoyed through his life.

Charlie, who lost his wife, Elaine, 2 months ago, and his son Mirv in 1990 at age 37, leaves to mourn his children Deb (Lou) Clare and their children James and Grace; Brenda Debelle (Clarance) with children Tess and Alexander; Lloyd (Anna Grubiak) children Michael, Lisa and Stephen; Adele (Dave) Dowe, children Louie, Jack and Eric; daughter-in-law Joan Kowalyshyn(Deryl Ortynsky), children Brooke (Riley and Rhett), Jodie (Kelly McTavich) Lucas, Jessica (Mike) Kwas.
