Muriel J. Van Otterloo

Mrs. Muriel Van Otterloo, age 84, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2019, at the Orange City Area Health System. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, December 21, at 11:00am, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. The Rev. Mark Haverdink will officiate. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. Visitation with the family will be on Saturday, from 10:00am to 11:00am, at the church. Arrangements are with the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Muriel Joan was born at the family home near Sioux Center on February 3, 1935, the daughter of Teunis and Dena (Zeutenhorst) Jansen. She grew up on the family farm and attended the Sioux Center Country School through the eighth grade. She was a long-time member of the Trinity Reformed Church and the First Reformed Church, both of Orange City, where she participated in the Women’s Circle groups and Bible studies. Muriel and Stanley John Van Otterloo were united in marriage on September 2, 1953, at Muriel’s home near Sioux Center. They moved to Ft. Hood, Texas, where Stanley was stationed in the United States Army. They later moved to a home in Orange City, where they lived for many years. In 2017, they became residents of the Landsmeer Ridge Retirement Community and later the Prairie Ridge Care Center, both in Orange City. Muriel had several jobs over the years, including working at the Orange City Hospital, K-Products, the Montgomery Ward catalog store, and the Royal Dutch Bakery. She also babysat in her home for many years. Later in life she enjoyed volunteering at the Bible’s for Missions store in Orange City. Stan and Muriel spent many enjoyable summers traveling with their camper. Some of their greatest memories are of the family gathering of kids and grandkids in many campgrounds in Minnesota, South Dakota, and at Okoboji. A special treat, was mom’s infamous potato salad, brought to these camping outings. Muriel also loved to listen to Gospel Country music and spend time embroidering. Survivors include her loving husband of more than 66 years, Stanley J. Van Otterloo, of Orange City; their four children, Michael (Elaine) Van Otterloo, of LeMars; Kevin (Linda) Van Otterloo, of Eagle Grove; Keva Dawn (Jeff) Wolf, of Marcus; and Steven (Allie) Van Otterloo, of LeMars; nine grandchildren, Micah (Laura) Van Otterloo; Jordan (Taylor) Van Otterloo; Caleb (Jenelle) Van Otterloo; Todd (Allison) Van Otterloo; Tim (Kamie) Van Otterloo; Emily Murphy; Justin (Stacey) Briese; Lynnsey Briese; and Kevin Van Otterloo; seventeen great-grandchildren; her siblings, Cornie (Anna) Jansen; Bernice De Vos; Harriet (Eldon) Tesch; and Thelma (Ron) Van Zee; a sister-in-law, Gert Jansen; a brother-in-law, John Miltenberger; many nieces and nephews; and a dear friend of the family, Fred Dykstra. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six siblings, Gerdena Jansen, Edward Jansen, Ann (Art) Kamerman, Cora (Arend) Broek, Mina (Willis) Uittenbogaard, Gerdena Miltenberger; and a brother-in-law, Irv De Vos.
