Betty Frances (Uhls) Mitchell
Betty Frances (Uhls) Mitchell, 93, passed away peacefully at home December 10, 2019, surrounded by family. Born in 1925 in Lexington, Kentucky to Tom and Mabel Uhls, she was a graduate of Henry Clay High School in Lexington and later married Emmett D Mitchell. They lived in Lexington and later moved to Merritt Island, Florida. Betty’s career began at The Lexington Herald Leader and continued at Florida Today in Cocoa, FL. A lifetime musician, she played the organ, piano, and sang at churches, community groups. During WWII, she sang at the Lexington Stopover for the USO and continued in community groups such as the Space Coast Sweet Adelines and Hot Cocoa Jazz Group. She passed her musical legend on to her children through her great-grandchildren. Betty loved her pet dogs and birds. Survivors include her four children, Peggy Patrick (Rondal), Helen Surmont (Albert), Jimmy Mitchell (Linda), and Jane Bird (Robert); nine grandchildren, Gene Patrick (Paula), Betty Hawkins (Randy), Joe Surmont (Sherry), Bobby Mitchell, Dee Nina Suchanek, James Mitchell, Jamie Petri Mitchell, Hilary MacTaggart (Trevor), and Kelly Berry (Paul); 24 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Bob Uhls, and husband. At her request, there will not be a service, just a private family celebration.
