Hugh Bennett Obituary

Hugh L. Bennett was born on September 16, 1947 in Linton, IN, and went to Heaven on December 10, 2019. Hugh was the son of Richard and Ruby Bennett of Camby, IN. Upon graduating from Decatur Central High School Hugh enlisted in the Navy. During his twenty-two years in the Navy, Hugh served in a variety of roles including an aviation electrician, quality control supervisor, and a career counselor. Hugh spent time on icebreakers in the Arctic and served on several aircraft carriers, including the USS. Franklin Roosevelt, USS Kitty Hawk, USS Ranger, and USS Carl Vinson. He traveled around the world three times by sea and crossed the equator at the prime meridian. Hugh concluded his career as a Naval instructor before retiring in 1987. Hugh married his wife, Susan, on April 1, 1988 in Santee, CA. Hugh and Susan relocated their family to West Monroe, LA in 1990. During this time Hugh and Susan attended Emmanuel Baptist Church, Fairpark Baptist Church, and McClendon Baptist Church. Hugh demonstrated great love and devotion to his family. It was a great joy to him to recall stories of his family, growing up in Indiana, and his Naval career. Hugh enjoyed spending time with his children and especially his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Poppy." When physically able Hugh enjoyed serving his church family by conducting minor repairs to the church building as well as serving in the nursery. Hugh also volunteered with the Southern Baptist Disaster relief team during times of need. Hugh was active in the American Legion serving as Treasure and then as Adjutant for American Legion Post 201 of West Monroe. Hugh was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ruby Bennett and his sister, Rathe Bennett. He is survived by his wife, Susan Bennett; daughters, Tawuna Riddle of Escondido, CA, Victoria (Michael) Douthit of West Monroe, LA, Nicole (Stephen) Gardner of Houston, TX, Kristin Bethke of Fargo, ND, Jozlyn Bennett of West Monroe, LA, and his grandchildren: Sean, Alysandra, Alyssa, Daniel, Jeremiah, & Samuel.
