Roger Malmberg

Roger Malmberg, the son of Harold and Hazel (Knight) Malmberg, was born July 6, 1939, in Randolph, Iowa and died December 10, 2019, at the Exira Care Center in Exira, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 5 months, and 4 days. Roger was baptized, confirmed, and received his first communion as an adult at the Catholic Church in Maryville, Missouri. He attended the Shenandoah Community Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1958. Roger enlisted in the National Guard and completed Basic Training before continuing his education at the Clarinda Junior College. Roger then transferred to Northwest Missouri State College in Maryville, Missouri. Along with studying, Roger worked full time for a local farmer to pay for his schooling. He received his Bachelor of Science and Physical Education Degrees in 1964. He moved to Audubon, Iowa where he started his teaching career teaching 7th grade Science in 1964. On May 29, 1965, he was united in marriage to Judy Lund at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shenandoah. They were blessed with four daughters Kimberly, Jody, Jenny, and Missy. Roger continued to teach in Audubon and during the summers he again worked for a farmer as he completed his Master's Degree in Education at Northwest Missouri State University. In Audubon Roger started the I.N.S. (I’ll Never Smoke) Club at Audubon Middle School. The club was intended to teach kids the dangers of smoking and to have them pledge that they would never smoke. Roger met with the kids after school and they would go help people in the community with small jobs and yard work at no charge in lieu of running around town and getting into negative activities such as smoking. During the summers, Roger taught drivers’ education for more than 30 years. Roger refereed many high school sports and some college sports. He also coached Jr. High Wrestling in Audubon for many years. He won many teaching awards, including Teacher of the Year and the Golden Apple Award. Roger taught in the Audubon School District for over 37 years when he retired in 2001. During retirement he operated his own lawn care business for many years. Roger was a member of the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Audubon. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and taught CYO classes. He was an avid Andy Griffith fan and enjoyed visiting Mayberry, N.C. many times. But most of all, Roger enjoyed spending time with his family. Roger was honored to receive the Citizen of the Year Award in 2013. Roger was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers and sister, Stephen Malmberg, Ronnie Malmberg, Paul Malmberg and Shirley Hart; his brothers- and sisters-in-law David Lund, Donnie Hart, Ann McDonald and Coleen Malmberg and his niece Julie Malmberg. Survivors include his wife, Judy Malmberg of Audubon; his daughters: Kimberly and husband Alan Vonnahme of Villisca, Iowa; Jody and husband Lonn Kiehne of Urbandale, Iowa; Jen and husband T.J.
