Howard H. Frey, Jr. Chicago, Virginia Obituary

Howard H. Frey, Jr.

Howard H. Frey, Jr. Our father, who art in heaven, Howard be thy name. Howard H. Frey, Jr., 70, passed peacefully at his home on November 12, 2019, with his wife and daughters by his side. Howie was preceded in death by his parents Howard Frey, Sr., and Helen Gamble Frey. He is survived by his adoring wife of 47 years, Eileen; two daughters, Allison DiVincenzo (Thomas) and Kelsey Frey; favorite sister, Ann Frey; triplet brothers, Bill (Mary Ellen), Tim (Mary Jo), and Mark (Lou Ann); three grandchildren, Hailey, Eliza, and Mac DiVincenzo; nine nieces and nephews; and a plethora of extended family and friends. Raised in Jenkintown, PA, Howard graduated from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce in 1971. While at "THE" University, he channeled his inner Animal House as a brother of Delta Upsilon and inadvertently met his future wife on a blind date. Howie earned his MBA from Bowling Green State University in 1972, then married and moved to Va. Beach to begin a banking career that ultimately branched out into various finance positions, including loan officer, bank senior vice president, business owner, independent contractor, and chief financial officer. Howie will be remembered for his dry humor, brilliant mind, and warm heart, as well as his love of UVA, sports, and family. He possessed an uncanny ability to solve complex math equations in his head and recall exact dates with Rain Man-like precision. He loved to read and relax outdoors and could complete a New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle in mere minutes. His generosity and humility were unparalleled; kind and hospitable, Howard was a genuine nurturer-- a fact that he'd vehemently deny if anybody dared call attention to it. Through to the very end of his life, he took much pleasure in following his sports teams -- UVA and the Philadelphia Eagles, Phillies, and 76ers -- and relished participating in his fantasy baseball league, APBA. He also loved the thrill of being involved in bracket pools for Bowl games and March Madness. Howard certainly marched to the beat of his own drummer, and now that rhythm continues to reverberate in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. "...That's the Gospel Truth." A memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 16, at 10 A.M. at All Saints' Episcopal Church, 1969 Woodside Lane in Virginia Beach, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the Betsey Gamble Feinour Jefferson Scholarship Fund at the Jefferson Scholars Foundation, 112 Clarke Court, Charlottesville, VA 22903.
