Samuel Leroy Owens Royal Oak, Michigan Obituary

Samuel Leroy Owens

November 19, 2019, age 93. Born in Wilkes-Barre in 1925, Sams father and grandfather worked in the coal mining industry. After high school, Sam enlisted in the Navy and spent 3 years in the Pacific during World War II. When the war was over, Sam returned home and met Jean Wilcox. Sam and Jean married, and Sam took advantage of the GI Bill to go to Wilkes College and earn a degree in Accounting. Sams career would take him to Harrisburg, PA, Annapolis, MD, and finally landing a job with Ford Motor Credit Company and moving the family to Southfield, MI. Sam loved sports. He played fast-pitch softball prior to moving to Michigan and continued to bowl and play golf. He was a fixture at all his kids and grandkids sporting events, concerts and activities. He loved to watch sports, especially the Michigan State football and basketball games. Sam also loved Big Band music, Sinatra and many others. Sam and Jean could cut a rug with their jitterbug moves. Sam was a member of the Royal Oak Elks #34, American Legion Post 374 and a charter member of Northbrook Presbyterian Church. Sams smile and wit made him a friend to everyone he met. He will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he has touched. Beloved husband of the late Jean for 65 years. Loving father of Susan Boatman (Larry), Carol McGuire (Dennis), James, William (Angela), and the late Jeffrey, and David. Cherished grandfather of Michael, Matthew, Keith, Lindsey, Derek, David, Sarah, Samuel, and Gabriella. Brother of the late Betty Emanski (the late John) and Stephen Owens.. My sincerest condolences for the family of such a sweet man. I worked for Sam at Ford Credit back in the 70's through the early 80's. He was a fair and kind person who always had a smile on his face.
