Helen C. Van Dyke, 91, a longtime resident of the Hillsboro community, died Tuesday morning, November 19, 2019 at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, 447 S.E. 3rd Avenue, in Hillsboro, with Fr. Lucio Villalobos, Celebrant. Co-Celebrant will be Fr. Michael Vuky, of Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church in Verboort. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will precede the Mass at 10:30 A.M. Burial Rites and Vault Interment will follow at 2:30 P.M. at the St. Matthew Parish Cemetery, 3355 S.E. 3rd Avenue in Hillsboro. Helen Catherine Van Dyke was born February 16, 1928 in Mountaindale, Oregon, the daughter of the late Emil Henry Duyck and Anna Marie (Hillecke) Duyck. She was raised in Mountaindale and attended the Harrison School, St. Francis School, and Banks High School, a graduate of the Class of 1946. After her high school graduation, Helen attended Marylhurst College for one year in Lake Oswego, having majored in education. She was united in marriage to Gerald Theodore Van Dyke on May 3, 1949 in the St. Francis Catholic Church in Roy. Following their marriage they resided in St. Paul, Oregon, until 1952, when they moved to the Hillsboro community. In 1954, they moved to their current farm in Hillsboro, where she had resided since. They raised strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, peaches, cannery squash, cucumbers, apples, pears and grain, as well as a variety of garden vegetables and sweet corn, which was a perennial favorite at the Hillsboro Farmers Market. Helen was instrumental in starting the Hillsboro Farmer’s Market and was one of the original vendors, selling her fruit and vegetables grown on the family farm. She was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Roy and later became an active member of St. Matthew’s Parish in Hillsboro, as well as their Altar Society, and Parents Club, serving as president for several years. Among her special interests were quilting, embroidery, crocheting, and other crafts, she was chairperson of the parish bazaar many years where she worked diligently. Helen was an avid quilter and held quilting bees at her house for years. She also had a greenhouse, where she grew vegetable and flower starts, which she shared with her family and friends. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, on December 1, 2004, after celebrating over fifty-five years of marriage together. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Emil and Anna Duyck and her two brothers, Edwin Duyck and Myron Duyck. Survivors include nine children and their spouses, MaryAnn and Ken Meeuwsen, of Cornelius, Oregon; David and Kaye Van Dyke, of Gaston, Oregon; Allen and Janet Van Dyke, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Ken and Lisa Van Dyke, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Marvin and Diana Van Dyke, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Gary and Kim Van Dyke, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Fred and Carol Van Dyke, of Cornelius, Oregon; Joe and Brenda Van Dyke, of Hillsboro, Oregon and Matt and Tracy Van Dyke, of Forest Grove, Oregon; her four brothers and a sister-in-law, Edmund Duyck, of Hillsboro, Oregon; Vernon Duyck, of Forest Grove, Oregon; Melvin Duyck, of Woodbine, New Jersey; Ralph and Sue Duyck, of Forest Grove, Oregon; her sister, Marie Schmidt, of Carlton, Oregon; and her sister-in-law Elaine Duyck, Banks, Oregon. Also surviving are her twenty-nine grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The family suggests that remembrances may be contributions to the Altar Society, c/o St. Matthew Catholic Church, 447 S.E. 3rd Avenue, Hillsboro, Oregon 97123, in her memory.
