James Grifasi Obituary

James “Jim” Grifasi, 77, of Rome, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Faxton-St. Luke’s Healthcare in New Hartford. Born in Rome on January 3, 1942, he was one of six children born to the late Gaetano and Assunta (Carletta) Grifasi. He was a 1960 graduate of Rome Free Academy and on May 11, 1963 he was united in marriage to Marie Marconi, a blessed union of 56 years. Jim was involved in multiple businesses in Rome including Grifasi’s Barber Shop, Jimbo’s Sub Shop, Grifasi’s Grocery Store and a foosball parlor. “Old Man Jim” retired from Turning Stone Resort and Casino in 2018 after 26 years. He was a member of St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Church. Surviving besides his loving wife, Marie, is his daughter, Michele Grifasi and her significant other, Larry Posselt and his daughter Isabella; two brothers, Ned Grifasi and Sam (Toni) Grifasi; his three grandchildren who were the light of his life, Mark Grifasi II (Caitlin Lyke and her son Blake Conway) and Kaleigh and Cameron Keneally; a great-grandson, Mark Grifasi III; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his son, Mark Grifasi; two sisters, Grace Calandra and Marie Giardino; and two brothers, Richard and Frank Grifasi. Jim’s family would like to express their gratitude to the staff on the 6th Floor and ICU at Faxton-St. Luke’s, Dr. Ramovich and especially RN Katie who was with him in his final moments, for their wonderful care and compassion. They would also like to thank his brother Ned who took Jim to many of his appointments and being there for him in his time of need. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary’s/St. Peter’s Church, 200 N. James St., Rome. Interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to call at Nunn and Harper Funeral Home, Inc., 418 N. George St., Rome, on Wednesday from 4-7:00 p.m. Contributions in Jim’s memory may be made to Multiple Sclerosis of CNY, PO Box, 237, 6743 Kinne St., E. Syracuse NY 13057.
