John Marion

On November 16, 2019, Jack Marion passed away at the age of 95 years. Jack was born in Edmonton on December 22, 1923 and lived in Edmonton throughout his long life. Jack was predeceased by his wife, Dee Marion in 2004; his brother, Don Marion in 2006; and his sister, Enid Green in 2012. He is survived by his children, Lynn (Kent) Grant, John (Lily) Marion and Lori Marion; and his three grandsons, Ryan, Scott and Spencer. Jack really appreciated being with his companion dog, MANDEE, following Dee’s passing. Jack was a veteran of the Second World War, serving in the RACF Air Crew and as a Signals Technician with the Canadian Army. In 1969 Jack received his Master of Education degree from the University of Oregon. He began his teaching career as an art teacher with the Edmonton Public School Board. He found the existing junior high art curriculum to be outdated, so he created his own art curriculum for Junior High students. It was very successful and led to him becoming the first Art Coordinator for the Edmonton Public School Board. Jack was an Assistant principal, a Principal and a District Principal for the Edmonton Public School Board. As a principal it quickly became clear that his major interest was to help his students. Soon his teaching staff began to respectfully refer to him as KING KID. Jack and Dee enjoyed travelling. A highlight of this was three Caribbean cruises and an extensive European tour. Jack and Dee loved the theatre and the Edmonton Symphony Pop performances. They were one of the first members of the Citadel Theatre and the Mayfield Dinner Theatre (Stage West). Jack and Dee really enjoyed seeing CATS at the New London Theatre and SHOWBOAT at the Ford Centre in Vancouver. Jack was involved with administrating several organizations- seven in total. Jack started the “DECORARTS CLUB” that became popular in Western Canada and parts of the United States. Jack loved Art. He was a trained Architectural Draftsman, a teacher of the history of Art, a teacher of art design, a painter, a caricaturist and a cartoonist. He was a Master of Art. Jack was well respected and will be dearly missed. A Gathering of Family and friends will be held Sunday, November 24 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Park Memorial Reception Centre, 11015 – 101 Street, Edmonton. In lieu of flowers, it was Jack’s wish that donations be made to the Edmonton Humane Society.
