Dorothy Eleanora Frati, 95, of North Bergen, NJ, passed away on Saturday, November 16, 2019. Memorial visitation will be on Wednesday, November 20 from 4-7 p.m. at Shook’s Cedar Grove Funeral Home, 486 Pompton Ave., Cedar Grove, NJ. A Catholic Prayer Service will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, NY at a later date. Memories and condolences may be shared at shookscedargrove.com. Born in New York, NY to the late Amadeo and Louisa Galante, Dorothy lived in Greenwich Village and Brooklyn, NY, before settling in North Bergen, NJ at Hudson Hills Nursing Home. She was a former member of the Salesian Sisters and a New York City Transit Police Officer. Dorothy received a double masters from New York University, New York, NY, and was a dietician at New York University Hospital for over 25 years prior to retiring. A lover of arts and culture, Dorothy enjoyed painting, creative writing, and being part of the Greenwich Village arts community, where she lived the majority of her life. She was a published author. Dorothy spent summers at her home in the Poconos, PA, where she lived among the many cats she rescued. She often declared she loved animals more than people. Her fiery spirit and strong will carried her through her long life. Dorothy proudly quoted Sinatra, “I did it my way!” and her way, she did. Predeceased by her parents and her daughter, Brenda, she is survived by her niece, Adrienne Cyran, and her husband, Fred, and their family; nephew, Richard Friaglia, and his wife, Sandra; great-nephew, Rick, and great-niece, Lindsay Stankovich, and her husband Steve; and great-great-nephew, Slate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Humane Society of New York, 306 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022, humanesocietyny.org/donations.
