Jane B. Blackman

Jane B. Blackman

Jane Blackman passed away unexpectedly but peacefully Saturday night November 9, 2019 after having visited with dear friends that day. The family is grateful to her many friends here in Atlanta that cared for her these past years. Emma Jane Beasley Blackman was born on March 25, 1931 in Daytona Beach, Florida, to Mary Louise Hall Beasley and Jesse Bryant Beasley. Jane had one sister Marty and five step-siblings: Angus Hastings, Mary Hastings Peaby, Ramona Hastings Blackman, Wade Hastings, and Sylvia Hastings Waller. Jane’s mother passed away when Jane was nine. Five years later, her father married the widow next door Mrs. Allene Hastings. Jane was excited to have her best friend Mona Hastings now as her sister. Later, Jane and Mona married Blackman cousins and remained best friends their entire lives, even talking on the phone to each other from their respective nursing homes. Jane and Richard Edward Blackman were teenage sweethearts. While at David Lipscomb College, they were May Queen and King their senior year. Jane and Richard married in 1952 in Jacksonville, Florida. They had two daughters, Debra Louise Blackman Arrington and Karen Elizabeth Blackman. Richard and Jane were dedicated Christians and loving parents. Richard served as a minister of the Gospel, and together he and Jane helped plant a church in Pompano Beach, Florida. Before they moved to Atlanta, they served churches in Jackson, MS and Gretna, LA. where Jane taught at Clifton L. Ganus Elementary School in Gentilly, LA. Jane was a soft-spoken Christian woman who knew her mind and who was passionate about teaching young children. She advised that to build strong self-esteem, children needed to be given competence, not compliments. The cousins knew Uncle Rick to be athletic and fun and Aunt Jane to be smart and a good cook. Jane taught at Greater Atlanta Christian School for over forty years, and was still tutoring full-time at age 81. She was influential in the lives of hundreds of students, many of whom stayed in touch with her until her death. Jane is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband, and her two daughters. Her surviving family includes her nephew Bill Barnes, his wife Cheryl and their son David; her niece Brenda Poarch and her husband Greg with daughters Jessica and Elizabeth and their families; also her niece Barrie Jane Fausz and her husband Jerry with daughter Melissa and son Daniel and his family. She is also survived on her husband’s side by many nephews and nieces who loved her: Charley and Joy Blackman Baker, Jim Green, John and Kathy Nunnally, Eddie and Susan Montgomery, Steve and Barbra Blackman, Pat and Charlene Shell, Roger and Becky Blackman, Mike Blackman and his mother Virginia Blackman Cicero, Phil and Janet Johnson, and Mark and Sherrylee Woodward. Visitation will be Wednesday, November 13, 2019, from 2:00-3:30pm followed immediately by the funeral service at Crowell Brothers-Peachtree Corners, 5051 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Peachtree Corners, GA 30092. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Jane Blackman Scholarship Fund, Greater Atlanta Christian School (1575 Indian Trail Road, Norcross, GA 30093) or to Campus Church of Christ Helping Hands Ministry, (1525 Indian Trail Lilburn Road, Norcross, GA 30093).
