Edward A. “Ed” Moats, 81, of Springfield, died at 4:47 p.m. on Friday, November 8, 2019, at Memorial Medical Center. Ed was born on August 23, 1938, in Springfield, the son of Silas Willard and Alice Marie (Garrett) Moats. He married Margaret Sponsler in 1965. Ed was a graduate of Williamsville High School and proudly served in the U.S. Army. He worked for many as mechanic. Some of Ed’s favorite things in life were attending auctions, specifically the Adcock-Britz Auction in Auburn, IL, watching NASCAR and baseball, and visiting his grandchildren, Brian Jr. and Jamie. He was preceded in death by his parents; and four brothers, Richard Hull, Andy, Donnie, and Willie Moats. Ed is survived by his wife, Margaret (Sponsler) Moats; four sons, John (wife, Ruth) Gristy, James Gristy, Robert (wife, Cheryl) Gristy, and Brian Moats; one daughter, Tammie (husband, Jim) Ciotti; 11 grandchildren; two brothers, John and Bill; five sisters, Sherry, Mary, Martha, Julie, and Cindy; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation & Graveside Ceremony: Family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at Boardman-Smith Funeral Home, 800 S. Grand Ave. West, Springfield. A graveside ceremony, with military honors, will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
