Jessie Verna Sobko Obituary

Jessie Wheeler (Shaughnessy, Sobko) – Passed away on November 10, 2019 at the age of 95, born in Peterborough, 1924.


Married John V. Shaughnessy and had 28 years of a loving and happy life, camping, singing with barbershop, playing music. John played base and Jessie played guitar. They have two sons, Mike Shaughnessy (Allison) and the late Larry Shaughnessy. John (Shag) as many knew him, passed away in 1972 from heart failure.


Loving Grandmother of Jason Law (Larissa) and Erin Duggan (Darrel). Great-Grandmother of Mikayla, Conner and Marshall. Great-Great Grandmother of Layla.


Jessie worked for John Robert Modeling Agency for 10 years, doing some modeling, trained in New York. Later joined cosmetic company, Germai-Montiel as regional manager, and retired at the age of 50.


Jessie married John Sobko in 1990 and loved him dearly. They had a very happy life, traveling, doing crafts together and both took up painting. She enjoyed dancing, shuffleboard and golf, and played a lot of card games. Jessie and John spent 20 winters in Tucson and Arizona. There, Jessie started playing and singing at the Cat Mountain social center and had many jams at their home. She also was a lifetime member of the Az. Fiddlers Club, doing back-up for the fiddlers. John was her roady and loved the music.


When marrying John, Jessie’s family grew to being a step-mother of David Sobko, Paul Sobko (Teri), Joanne Sobko, Kathryn Sobko, and Murray Sobko. Step-Grandmother of Nicole, Jodie, Andrea; Alison, Courtney; Adrian, Daniel; Nathan; Jake and Kate. Step Great-Grandmother of many grandchildren.


Jessie joined Garnet Powell’s band when they moved to Lindsay. The band is Tunes Of The Past, and played at senior citizens’ homes. Jessie had a full life with many friends and family.


Jessie is the dear sister of the late Harold Wheeler (the late Mary), Bill Wheeler (the late Joan) and the late Ken Wheeler (Mac). Jessie will be remembered by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, extended family and friends.


Visitation will take place at the Mackey Funeral Home, 33 Peel Street, Lindsay on Friday, November 15th from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will take place at Celebrations, 35 Lindsay Street North, on Saturday, November 16th at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Fenelon Falls Cemetery.
