Leroy Thompson Obituary

A TIME TO BE BORN: Leroy David Thompson, “Dickie” as he was affectionately called by many, was born Sunday December 3, 1922, to the late James and Mabel Thompson. Leroy was the second of nine children. A TIME TO DIE: Leroy transitioned from this life to his heavenly home, peacefully on Sunday November 3, 2019, at Autumn Lake Healthcare in Chestertown, Maryland. A TIME TO LAUGH: Educated in Kent County Maryland. In his earlier years he enjoyed hanging out with his hometown boys, Spencer Hicks, Walter Miller, Charlie Toulson and Harrison Black, often he spoke of the good times all of them had, while saying, “All my good friends have died.” Leroy enjoyed taking the children in Butlertown to the beach and for hayrides in his truck, each child gave him a popsicle for the ride. He also enjoyed playing poker with his friends and watching the Baltimore Orioles. He could make you laugh with some of the stories he would tell. He enjoyed watching others enjoy themselves. A TIME TO LOVE: Leroy was united in holy matrimony, in 1946, to Ethel Virginia Thompson, until her transition in 2005. Together they loved, nurtured and raised Benita Thompson Harris. Leroy had four chosen grandchildren Tiffany, Marvin, Kisha and Curtis. Leroy and his wife opened their home and their hearts up to many other children. Leroy enjoyed having gatherings for family and friends in his yard. A TIME TO BUILD: Leroy was employed in Delaware prior to becoming a self-employed brick mason. Leroy built his family home in Butlertown, Maryland. He could be seen cutting the grass at Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church in Fairlee, Maryland and Mount Olive AME Church in Butlertown, Maryland. At an early age, Leroy was a member of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and later became a trustee at Mount Olive AME Church, under Reverend John T. Chambers A TIME TO WEEP: Leroy was preceded in death by his parents, James and Mabel Thompson; his wife, Ethel Virginia Thompson; four brothers, James, Ellsworth, Eugene and Francis Thompson; and two sisters Margaret Commodore and Hazel Waters. A TIME TO MOURN: Leroy leaves to cherish his precious memory, daughter, Benita Harris of Chestertown, Maryland; grandchildren, Tiffany, Marvin, Kisha and Curtis; two sisters, Ethel Johnson of Rock Hall, Maryland and Sylvia Marrow of Dunleth, Georgia; one brother, Haywood Thompson of Chestertown, Maryland; three sisters-in-law, Julia Ann Thompson of Chestertown. Maryland, Jean Butler of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Lauretta Freeman of Butlertown, Maryland; two brothers-in-law, Ellsworth Johnson of Rock Hall, Maryland and William Butler of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; goddaughter, Denisha White; and a multitude of nieces and nephews, other relatives, extended family and friends.
