Janice O’Neill Brintnall was called to begin her eternal life on October 30th, 2019. Predeceased by her husband of fifty-four years, BG Clarke M. Brintnall, and survived by her loving daughter, Julie Brintnall-Karabelas, son-in-law William Karabelas, and her most dear and cherished grandsons Thomas and Peter.
Born in New Jersey in 1930, moved as an infant to Bronxville, New York where she was raised. She earned her B.A. from Trinity College, Washington, D.C. and her M.A. from Columbia University. She worked as a journalist for the New York Times, taught elementary school around the world and as a real estate agent with Century 21 in Olde Dominion, N. Virginia.
Janice embraced being an Army wife dedicating her life to her husband’s long and distinguished career, and except for Vietnam, was always by his side. Together, they traveled on numerous tours of duty including Defense Attache’ and Army Attache’ in Brazil where she became fluent in Portuguese. With her outgoing nature and infectious laugh, lavish parties for international leaders, she made lifelong friends everywhere, serving in clubs, organizations, and charities. Janice was President of the Army Officer’s Wives Club (AOWC) at Fort Meyer, also serving on the board for years, involved with the Army Wives Zip Code Group and famous for her festive Christmas luncheons. An avid member of her “Brazil Group” and she adored her West Point family. Her many hobbies included playing bridge with various groups and she was the Chair of the AOWC of the Greater Washington Area bridge group. Janice also enjoyed volunteering for health associations, her daughter and grandsons’ schools and the White House. She was a member of the Cosmos Club and Nativity Catholic Church. She was a captivating writer and had numerous articles published. She had a talent for telling fascinating and hilarious stories.
Her many homes included: beloved “Eastway” in Bronxville, Maryland, the Canal Zone in Panama, Arizona, California, Rio de Janeiro and Brasilia, Brazil, Florida, Pennsylvania, and several tours in Washington D.C. She was an enthusiastic traveler and visited too many countries to list, from the upper Amazon to the Great Wall. She and her husband enjoyed cruising and visited hundreds of ports, citing St. Petersburg, Istanbul, Odessa, and Vancouver as favorites.
Janice’s greatest passion was her family. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Jeremiah F. O’Neill and Enez R. O’Neill, sister, Jeraldine Traxler, nephew Thomas, great-niece Elizabeth and goddaughter Pratricia Faviere. She is survived by her cherished nieces and nephews, Janice Carr (Fred), Suzi Forgach (Jeff), Robert Traxler and William Traxler, nieces Susan Lamb (Jeff), Sandi Burk (Arlo) and Diane Scott (late John) and her beloved great-nieces and nephews Jackie, Tina (Ben), Peter, and Anna Forgach, Kathleen Carr and dearest great-niece Isabel Carr. She considered Alex and Sandy Karabelas family.
A funeral mass will be held at 1:30 p.m. on November 23 at Nativity Catholic Church in Burke, 6400 Nativity Lane, Burke. Immediately following, family will receive guests for light refreshments. Interment will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
