Dave Stuart O’Neil, age 60, unexpectedly went home to be with God, his father Maurice, and his sister Evelyn, on Friday, April 15, 2016. He was a father to, and survived by, four amazing children, Chad David and Mandy O'Neil (Orin and Flora), Heather Diane and Brian VanOrder, Steven Stuart and Christopher Fletcher-O'Neil and Holly Lynn O'Neil (Elizabeth Lynn); his ex-wife of 31 years, Theresa Diane O'Neil; his significant other, Beth Pierson; and his mother, Fanny Mae O'Neil. Dave was a father of four, but a teacher, mentor, friend, and leader of many. Music was his life and greatest joy. He devoted his life to sharing his art and passion, his music. He played many, many instruments but his most treasured and most notable were his bagpipes. He played thousands of funerals, weddings and other various events. Inspiration has come to Dave in many forms from The Golden Book records his great-grandma gave his sister while growing up to the music of the Irish group, “The Chieftains”. One man in particular brought together the image of how music and spirit are entwined for Dave. “When I was very young, I heard an elderly man play hymns on the saw (hand saw played with a fiddle bow). He could get such great feeling and expression out of such a painfully inadequate instrument—kind of like God does with my life.” A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 23, 3:00 PM, at Westwood Church (2828 Richmond St. NW Grand Rapids, MI 49504). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Steven Fletcher – O’Neil to help offset expenses. Dave will live on through Gift of Life.
