Alfred LeRoy (A.L.) Setzer Jr. Obituary

Alfred Leroy (A.L.) Setzer Jr. passed away unexpectedly on Friday morning 4/15/2016. A.L. was born on November 2, 1925 to Alfred Lee Setzer, Sr. & Lela Ruth Cline Setzer. He lived his entire lifetime at or near his current residence on Hwy 10, Claremont, NC. Mr. Setzer was successful in numerous endeavors from logging, to transportation, construction, dairy farming, engineering and investing. He was the special projects engineer/manager for Smith Setzer and Sons for over 30 years. There was nothing that A.L. could not fix, modify, or invent. His pride however was in his family. He and his wife, Atha LaFay, who predeceased him on December 14, 2005 were the parents of three children, Mrs. Brenda (Stacy) Coker of Laurel, Maryland; Mr. Rick (Sue Lynn Carpenter) Setzer of Greenville, S.C.; and Mrs. LaDonna (John) Bost of Clemmons, N.C Mr. Setzer has five grandchildren, Mr. Eric (Michelle) Coker. Mr. Christopher (Jenn) Coker, Mr. David (Kristen) Setzer, Ms. Jennifer Setzer, and Mrs. Summer (Chris) Bost Jackson. As well, there are 13 great-grandchildren He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Joyce Setzer Huffman, and Pauline Setzer Shook. Surviving other than his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren is a brother-in- law, Mr. Bill Hoke Mr.Setzer was raised at Shiloh Methodist Church though after marriage he and Atha began attending her home church Immanuel Lutheran, and were members for over 60 years. They were both intricately involved in its leadership and service to the community. A.L. and Atha were long time supporters of the Lutheran faith and its seminaries, with an impact on many of the lives that passed through Immanuel as well as its higher education facilities. In his wife’s last years of failing health, A.L. became known for his compassionate visitation among the many nursing facilities that served his wife and others. He was a devoted follower of Christ, and in his last years witnessed to many bringing them to faith in Christ. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Newton, NC, with a private interment for extended family at the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 1:00-2:00 p.m. at Burke Mortuary in Newton prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to either the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association or The Lutheran Hour, 660 Mason Ridge Center Drive, St. Louis, MO 63141.
