Steven W Smith

Steven W. Smith, 66, of Mount Carmel, IL passed away on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at St. Vincent Heart Center in Indianapolis, IN with his loving family by his side. He was born on April 14, 1950 in Wabash County, IL the son of Silas and Leola Jean (Richardson) Smith. Steven graduated from Mount Carmel High School Class of 1968. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Steven took great pride in his work as a coal miner and retired from the mine after working twenty plus years at Amax, Black Beauty Coal and Gibson County Coal. He married Joyce Baumgart on February 17, 1996 at the New Life Fellowship in Mount Carmel, IL. Together they enjoyed twenty years of marriage, spending with their family and vacationing with their friends. Steven loved having family gatherings at their cabin at Mesa Lake. Steven always had a smile and never knew a stranger. He was very proud of his children and grandchildren. He loved going to his grandchildren’s sporting events and was their number one fan. He was an active member of the Free Methodist Church in Mount Carmel and loved teaching the youth of his church. In Steven’s free time he enjoyed playing golf with his friends, singing and playing the drums. Steven will always be remembered for his kind hearted spirit and willingness to help others. He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Smith of Mount Carmel; his children, Steven Jarrod (Joleene) Smith of Jacksonville, FL, William (Sara Tingley) Baumgart of Marshal, IL, Dennis (Reilly) Baumgart of Mount Carmel, Shannon Walker of Mount Carmel and Christina (Jeff) Binhack of Princeton, IN; grandchildren, Brandon and Nathan Smith, Chet Baumgart, Brittany Binhack, Whitney, Gracie and Ashton Walker and Wesley Tingley; great grandson, Beau Barnes; two brothers, Fred (Brenda) Smith of Carmi, IL and Phillip (Vickie) Smith of Bellmont, IL; sister, Nita (John) Edwards of Peoria, IL; many loved cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his family and all who knew him. Steven was preceded in death by his parents. Family and friends are invited to gather from 4:00 p.m., - 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 19, 2016 in the Chapel of Keepes Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at the Free Methodist Church, 412 Poplar Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863 with Minister Deron Colgan officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Mount Carmel, IL. Memorial contributions may be made in Steven’s memory to the Free Methodist Church. Envelopes will be at the funeral home or can be mailed to Keepes Funeral Home, 1500 North Cherry Street, Mount Carmel, IL 62863. Keepes Funeral Home is serving the family with the arrangements.
