Virginia (Craven) Underkofler, age 98, passed away Saturday, April 16, 2016 at the Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 9 West Linn Street, Marshalltown, IA. Friends may visit with the family on April 19, 2016 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a vigil following at Anderson Funeral Homes, 405 W Main Street, Marshalltown, IA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary’s Church or Iowa River Hospice, 502 Plaza Heights Road, Marshalltown, IA 50158. Online condolences may be sent to www.andersonfhs.com. Ginny was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Lee and Julia Craven. She graduated in 1936 from Sioux City Central High School. Her college years at the University of Iowa occurred during the time of the Great Depression. She worked at the University Library to put herself through school. She resided in the Coast House on Fairchild Street, a Women’s Cooperative Dormitory, where the students handled the housekeeping to save expense. After a photo competition, Ginny was selected by Actor Don Ameche to be the Dolphin Fraternity’s Queen at one of their elaborate annual shows to promote aquatic sports at the University. Ginny met her future husband Thomas (a/k/a “Tom” or “Tut”) while at a Memorial Union social function. Tom was working as a waiter at the event. He spilled a beverage on Ginny’s date. After graduation in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in economics, Ginny married Tom and continued to work at the Library to help finance his education at the Iowa Dental School.Tom served as an Army Dentist during the years of World War II. Ginny accompanied him to assignments at dental clinics in Wisconsin and Chicago. Their first two children, Richard and Janice were born in Army hospitals. Following his discharge, the family moved to Marshalltown, where Tom set up his dental practice at an office above the Gamble’s store on Main Street. Three more children were added to the family: Bob; Tom, Jr. and Peggy. The family enjoyed many trips during summer vacations, including an annual Minnesota trip for 39 consecutive years to Rainy Lake with children and grandchildren. Ginny was an avid Hawkeye fan. She was a classmate of Nile Kinnick in a 1st year English course at the University of Iowa. She attended football games in Iowa City every year, including an annual bus trip with friends to away games at Wisconsin or Minnesota. A baby sitter was engaged most Saturday evenings for dancing at the Elks and Elmwood County Club. Ginny was an avid reader. She loved sewing and cooking. She was always health conscious and exercised all her life. She served on the boards of St. Mary’s School, the YWCA and the hospital. She belonged to the Madonna Study Club, Chapter LT of P.E.O. and the Twentieth Century Club for which she was a President. Ginny had been an eleven-year resident of The Embers Retirement Community, where children Bob, Tom and Peggy were born when it was St. Thomas Mercy Hospital. Ginny is survived by her children: Richard (Marilyn) Underkofler, Highland, IN; Janice (Gary) Brown, Ankeny, IA; Bob (Lauri) Underkofler, Excelsior, MN; and Peggy (Denny) Cahill, Marshalltown, IA. Eleven grandchildren survive: Chad Underkofler, Charlottesville, VA; Jon Underkofler, Highlands Ranch, CO; Carrie (Brown) Benito, Mundelein, IL; Mark Brown, Iowa City, IA; Darcie (Brown) Tallman, Gilbert, IA; Brian Underkofler, Chicago, IL; Michael Underkofler, Chicago, IL; Nathan Underkofler, Des Moines, IA; Tad Cahill, Parker, CO; Megan (Cahill) Brockmeier, St. Louis, MO; and Beau Cahill, Steamboat Springs, CO. She was proceeded in death by Brother Bob Craven, husband Thomas, son Thomas, Jr. and grandchildren Wesley and Jennifer Underkofler
