Hilda Marie Powers, 79, died March 25, 2016 in St. Luke’s Hospital from complications due to stroke, surrounded by those she loved. Hilde was born September 17, 1936 to Arthur and Ruth Pettit in Wright, Minnesota. She and her sisters, Katha and Margaret, shared many rooms and adventures together. Hilde and her husband, Darold, met while working together at the Cloquet paper mill and married October 26, 1957. Hilde led a creative life in Carlton, MN, working for a time as a cosmetologist with her own practice. Hilde’s Beauty Shop was a hub of friendship and conversation. Hilde enjoyed the visual arts and expressed herself with many materials and methods. She used drawing and painting for image making and extended her skills to design an A-frame that rests near her home. Hilde excelled in couture, making much of her daughter’s clothing, including her wedding dress. She also surrounded herself with plants to reflect her love of things that grow. Much of her time was spent on the tree farm in Blackhoof, cultivated by her husband and close family. Above all, Hilde possessed the ability to love unconditionally and shared herself with those around her — a force of kindness and support. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Margret Leppi, and her husband, Willard; and brother-in-law, Alvin Aho. Hilde is survived by her husband of 58 years, Darold; her daughter and favorite son-in- law, Dawn Marie and Kevin Browne; her grandson, Cameron, and his partner, Claire; her sister, Katha Aho; many nieces, nephews, and her casino cohorts, Lori and Pat. The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2016 in the Fireside Room of Atkins-Northland Funeral Home, 801 14th Street, Cloquet, MN.
