Harvey Thomas Melstad Obituary

Harvey Thomas Melstad, 91, Bismarck, passed away Saturday, October 19, 2019, at Touchmark of Bismarck. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, October 25, 2019, at First Lutheran Church, Bismarck with Rev. Allen Wagner officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled for 5 – 7:00 PM Thursday, October 24, 2019, at DaWise-Perry Funeral Services, Mandan. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church. Harvey was born February 23, 1928 at Hetland, SD, to Lewis J. and Gertrude (Hatlestad) Melstad. He was raised and educated in Hetland. He served our country in the army in the Korean War. He was proud of his service and continued to be active in the VFW and serving as a member of the Honor Guard. While in college, he met Wilma Kalvig and they were married on August 28, 1954. They enjoyed 58 years together. He graduated from South Dakota State University with a degree in civil engineering and started his career designing bridges in Wyoming. Eight years later, he moved his family to Bismarck, taking a job as a civil engineer with the Federal Highway Department where he worked until retirement. After retirement, he worked part-time developing “T-squared” a technology transfer program for counties in North Dakota. He was an active member of First Lutheran Church. He was also active in the Elks Chorus, Lions, Masons, Sons of Norway, Plainsmen, Honor Guard, and the North Dakota State Water Board. Harvey was a skilled handyman/carpenter and could fix or build anything. He designed and physically built the houses where his family lived (with lots of “help” from his young daughters). He helped each of his daughters’ families with any needed repairs or building of their homes, spending his “vacation” fixing basements, decks or whatever needed doing. He also shared these skills with his friends and his church in Bismarck as well. He continued to be busy and creative in retirement, enjoying painting, swimming, golf, hunting, fishing and woodcarving. Harvey carried this in his wallet: “That man is a success: who has lived well, laughed often and loved much; who has gained the respect of intelligent men and the love of children; who has filled his niche and accomplished his task; who leaves the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul; who never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it; who looked for the best in others and gave the best he had.” He was a devoted, loving and fun husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by his daughters, Stephanie (Steve) Olson, Bismarck, Jeanine (Bruce) Senti, Grand Forks, Gretchen (Henry) Gertje, Olympia, WA, and Eileen (Jeff) Holm, Willmar, MN; brother, Burton Melstad, Banks, OR; grandchildren, Kathryn (Matt) Nesheim, Janet (Raja) Banerjee, Jason (Jessica) Senti, David (Jodi) Senti, William Senti, Hans Gertje, Eric Gertje, Kirsten Gertje, Kelsey Gertje, Sarah Holm, Zach (Sudha) Holm, and Mark Holm; and fourteen great-grandchildren. Harvey was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma; his parents; brother, Lewis; sister, Shirley; and great-grandchild, Claire.
