Carl Virgil Lewis

Mr. Carl Virgil Lewis, 30, passed away suddenly Wednesday (October 16, 2019) at his apartment in Savannah, GA. He was born in Waycross, GA to the late Grady Carl Lewis and Bonita Hanchey Lewis. Carl was a 2007 honor graduate of Ware Magnet School and later graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mercer University with a B.A. in Journalism and Southern Studies. He continued his education at Columbia University where he received a M.S. in Data Visualization and Digital Media. Carl’s first job was at Savannah Morning News where he worked as Digital Editor developing interactive data-driven news graphics. During the past three years, he founded Open Savannah and Data Viz Tools. He also owned CVL Holdings. He will be remembered as the brilliant and gifted writer who left us far too soon. He was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Bonita Lewis; his grandmother, Bernice Stuckey Lewis; two uncles, Jerome Hanchey and Charles Allen; and a cousin, Devin Lane. He is survived by his brother, Gavin Grady Lewis of Hoboken; his grandparents, Virgil & Virginia Hanchey of Hoboken and Carl Howard Lewis of Waycross; several aunts and uncles, Darlene Lane (Terry) of Hoboken, Karen Purvis (Kelvin) of Hoboken, Cheryl Allen of Bachlott, Debbie Hanchey of Waycross, Eddie Hanchey (Glenda) of Hoboken, Belton Hanchey (Lesley) of Hoboken, Kirby Hanchey (Lynn) of Hoboken, Mark Lewis of Decatur, and Anna Lewis of Waycross. A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday (October 20, 2019) at Spring Hill Cemetery in Hoboken with Rev. Tim Rowell officiating. Active pallbearers will be Dr. Leonard Bennett, Brad Lane, Darin Lane, Tim Reed, Dustin Allen, and Avery Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will include Karla West, Kaylen Gill, Stephanie Dunsmore, Samantha Sears, and Chris Allen.
