Bertha E. Hickman, age 90 of Donnellson, passed away at 12:47 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2019 at H.S.H.S. St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Saturday, November 2, 2019 at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Greenville with Father Paul officiating. Interment will follow in Hazel Dell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until 2:15 PM on Saturday Nov. 2, at the Donnell-Wiegand Funeral Home in Greenville. For those who desire memorials in Bertha’s memory may be made to Masses or to the Lost and Found in Greenville, both at the Funeral Home or at the Church. Bertha Evelyn Craig, the daughter of Edward Valentine Craig and Genevieve Mary Pashea Craig, was born on June 23, 1929 in Tiff, Mo. She grew up there until the age of 10 when the family moved to St. Louis. Bertha and James Harvey Hickman were united in marriage on May 22, 1948 in Muskogee, OK. They lived in Granite City and Maryville where Bertha owned Bert’s Café in Collinsville. They raised their family in Collinsville where Bertha worked at Northgate Café, Pancake House, Maryville Children’s Home, and last for the Collinsville School district where she was manager of Unit 10 Collinsville School District food Service. In retirement Jim and Bertha moved first to McLeansboro, then to Donnellson where she enjoyed baking, gardening, and water aerobics. Bertha is survived by her four children, Beverly A. Klein of Sorento, Barbara (Douglas) Schaufelberger, of North of Greenville, James “Eddie” Hickman of Donnellson, Brenda (Steve) Rodgers of Hartford, sister Barbara Boyer of Hoffman Estates, 9 grandchildren: James Robert Hickman, Jason R. Klein, Stephen P. Klein, Ryan M. Klein, Erik M. Klein, Amy L. Hickman, Lori A. Kuck, Robin W. Hickman, Stephanie N. Rodgers, 16 great grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren. Bertha is preceded in death by her parents, her husband James on August 4, 2005, a grandson Gary Lee Rodgers, a great great-grandson Evander Hickman, and by siblings including Arthur Craig, Martin Craig, and Betty Boyer. Bertha is a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church and a former member of the Home Extension and the water Aerobics here in Greenville.
